The Happenings in Ms. Ketners’ Class

April 19th, 2017 edition

Dear Families,

Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful break, enjoyed family time and made some lifelong memories! I am so excited for the next 9 weeks, as we have so many fun times to experience over the course of these final weeks of elementary school A quick reminder that SBA testing takes place next week; Mon/Tues. is our ELA testing and Thurs./Fri. is our Math testing. Students are welcome to bring in sugar free gum to chew during the testing time.

Camp Coleman is quickly approaching! Please remember to review all of your packing information with your child as well as note the drop off time for luggage on Sunday, April 29th, from 4pm to 5pm, in front of the school.

Finally, our moving up ceremony is planned for Thursday, June 16th! This is a great time to celebrate all of the great accomplishments and hard work these kiddos have done throughout there time here at Grand Ridge. This will be following by our 5th grade graduation party (field trip) to enjoy bowling and pizza. More specific info will be sent out soon!

In the classroom:

Reading:m

-  Comprehending the differences between explicit and implicit meaning in texts.

-  Read aloud: We Are Not Eaten By Yaks by. Alexander London

Writing:

-  Students have been busy working on their Memoir pre-assessments.

-  We will begin our work in memoir on Friday

-  Authors visit with Brandon Mull 4/20

Science:

-  Beginning our look into Chapter 6 with the flow of electricity.

Math:

- Great job on Module 5, 5th graders!

-Beginning Module 6 tomorrow with lesson 1. This is our final module for math in elementary school! Whoohoo!

History:

-  This week we began chapter 10 with the look into growing tensions between the colonies and Britain.

After School Movies

Our last After School Movies are coming! We will show Alvin and the Chipmunks, Road Chip (PG) on Wednesday, Apr. 19th and The Peanuts Movie (PG) on Wednesday, May 17th, for your student's enjoyment, immediately after school. Each After School Movie date is open to all grades (K-5) and there are 100 first-come-first-served spots available for each movie. A $10 donation is requested per Grand Ridge student. Registration for the movie is due no later than the Monday before the showing you wish to attend. No exceptions. Go to http://grandridgeptsa.org to register your child and sign-up to volunteer. SAVE THE DATE for Grand Ridge Elementary’s Cultural Fair! Wednesday, April 26th - 5:30-8:00pm

We will celebrate therich diversity of cultures that we have represented in our school with an epic Cultural Fair! "Travel" through the world, have fun, and get your "passport" stamped in each "country"! Enjoy our Multi-Cultural Stage that will feature traditional dances and music. Grab dinner at one of the five international food trucks. Wear traditional clothes if you wish and bring your entire family!! Don't miss the biggest event of the school year!

Cultural Fair Volunteers - April 26:As you know the Cultural Fair is coming up! We have already more than 80 volunteers working to put together this amazing event. But guess what? We need more! We need you to help us set up and clean up all the tables. Please sign up ONLY if you are not leading a booth or volunteering in one.

Grizzly Guy Recess Buddies - (Nov - May): You can make a difference just by playing games & hanging out with students at lunch & recess. Once approved as a volunteer you can sign in at the office, don the Grizzly Guys vest and join in the fun!

Popcorn Friday volunteers - Popcorn Friday is the first Friday of every month, during second recesses. We would love to have volunteers to help pop the corn, collect quarters, hand out popcorn to the kids, and clean up after it is done. It is a VERY fun job, and a great way to meet and get to know other parents.
