Policy Title: Funeral Leave Policy For Administrative & Effective Date: May 4, 2015

Faculty Employees

Responsible Office: Human Resources

Responsible Official: Director of Human Resources

1.0  Purpose of Policy

It is the University's Policy that all eligible members of the University Community be allowed reasonable time to arrange for and/or attend the funeral of immediate family members without the loss of wages for that period.

2.0 Leave Allowance & Compensation

In the event of a death in the immediate family as defined below, a faculty or administrative employee will be granted up to five (5) working days off with pay in order to attend the funeral. In the event that the internment takes place out of state and return travel time is needed, one of the five (5) days provided for in this section may be utilized for such purpose. Should the employee not attend the funeral, he/she will be granted one (1) working day off with pay, which day shall be taken within one (1) week of the date of death. If additional time off is desired in either situation, the employee may request vacation or, in the absence of vacation availability, leave without pay from their immediate supervisor. Human Resources must be advised should additional time off, without pay be granted.

Funeral leave of one (1) day with pay will be granted so that an employee may attend the funeral in the event of the death of an employee's aunt, uncle, grandparent, grandchild, current brotherinlaw, or current sisterinlaw

In the event that a death/funeral, as described above, occurs while an employee is not scheduled to work (i.e. vacation, holiday, sick leave, etc.) the time off with pay provisions of this policy do not apply.

3.0 Definition of Immediate Family

Immediate family is defined as the employee's parents, spouse, child, brother, sister, current spouse's parents, step-parent and step child.

4.0 Required Documentation.

A Funeral Leave Certification Form must be submitted to the Human Resources Department whenever an employee is absent from scheduled work due to a death in the family. This form can be found on Inside UNH under the My HR tab. The University reserves the right to request additional documentation to substantiate the date of death, date of funeral, and the relationship with the deceased.
