ACTIVE GRC RESEARCHERS PACKET 2009-2010
Another year has come and gone and it is time once again for all active researchers at the GRC to submit yearly research reports, including Proposal Renewals. These must reach the GRC by October 31, 2009. For new research projects, please remember it is imperative that you submit your proposals at least 3 months in advance of your planned date of arrival on San SalvadorIsland so that paperwork can be processed in good time through the BEST Commission in Nassau A Research Proposal form will be sent to you upon request. The enclosed packet should provide everything you need to fulfil the requirements to keep your research project(s) and permit(s) up-to-date and active. Please note that processing is now done through the BEST Commission, however the same Dept. of Agriculture forms are being completed as before. Forms must be sent electronically to the following address: . However, only the page headed Section B which requires the signature of the applicant, must be sent via fax first and then the original sent via regular mail.
With regard to the enclosed forms:
(1) Every researcher who currently has an active research project/number with the GRC must submit a Progress Report for each project. Even if that research project/number is to be retired you should submit a Progress Report to inform us of your final results and publications. Please be sure to answer the question on the form as to whether the project/number is to remain active or not. If you do not submit a Progress Report by the October 31st deadline and do not inform us that you want to keep your research project/number active, that project/number will be retired and a new proposal must then be submitted if you wish to continue such research.
(2) Remember, if you plan to conduct fieldwork on any of these projects in the Bahamas in the coming year, you must also submit to the GRC a Proposal Renewal form AND a Bahamas Department of Agriculture Research Application (both forms included in this packet) for each project to allow us to get the proper permit(s).
(3) If you did field work on those projects this past year, you are required to submit a Field Work Report.
THE COLLEGE OF THE BAHAMAS
Center for the Study of Archaeology, Biology, Geology, and Marine Science
For researchers submitting new proposals or contemplating new proposals, we have available upon request our booklet, "Publications, Contributions & Research of the Bahamian Field Station," which should help you to determine what work has been done or is currently in progress.
Please be reminded about the following requirements of the Bahamas Department of Agriculture:
For specimens of any variety collected in the Bahamas, they require that a specific list be submitted indicating the quantities and disposition of those specimens. They also request that photos and/or slides be included with your research reports. For biologists who collect plants or insects, the Dept. of Agriculture requires that duplicate sets of any specimens collected be deposited at the GRC for transfer to the Dept. of Agriculture in Nassau. Please be very clear on the dates you wish to carry out your research as the respective Ministries wish to construct research calendars each year. If this is not done your proposal will be returned for this information to be incorporated. You may list, for example “1st – 30th of June 2010” instead of specific days, if you are not sure.
Please also remember the new immigration policy of the Bahamas: All U.S. citizens travelling in and out of the Bahamas are required to have a passport.
I would like to thank all the members of the scientific committee for their ongoing support and assessment of research proposals, and look forward to seeing many new research proposals for the upcoming year. If you have any questions about the enclosed documentation, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at the above address.
Sincerely,
Thomas A. Rothfus
Executive Director
