2011 COLORADO COURT REPORTERS ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD.
IT IS MY DISTINCT HONOR AND PRIVILEGE TO PRESENT THE 2011 COLORADO COURT
REPORTERS ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT IS
SO WELL-DESERVED, BUT BECAUSE IT IS, QUITE FRANKLY, LONG OVERDUE.
OUR 2011 DSA RECIPIENT RECEIVED HER REPORTING TRANING AT MILE HIGH
REPORTING SCHOOL AND RECEIVED HER CERTIFICATE FROM THERE IN 1978. SHE WAS
AN INSTRUCTOR AT THE DENVERACADEMY OF COURT REPORTING FROM 1980 TO 1995
AND BECAME THE NIGHT SCHOOL DIRECTOR. IN 1995 SHE BEGAN EMPLOYMENT WITH
THE 18TH JUDICIAL DISTRICT, WORKING FOR JUDGE FASING. IN 2010 SHE WAS
PROMOTED TO MANAGING COURT REPORTER AND IS EMPLOYED IN THAT CAPACITY
TODAY.
OUR 2011 DSA RECIPIENT NOT ONLY HAS BEEN A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING OF
CCRA FOR MANY YEARS, BUT HAS SERVED THIS ASSOCIATION AND THE COURT
REPORTING PROFESSION IN COLORADO EXTREMELY WELL AND BEYOND THE CALL.
SHE SERVED ON CCRA’S COURT OFFICIALS COMMITTEE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, AND
DURING A TIME WHEN MANY MEETINGS WITH THE STATE COURT ADMINISTRATOR’S
OFFICE, THE CHIEF JUSTICE DIRECTIVE COMMITTEE, AND OUR LOBBYIST WERE
NECESSARY. TRUST ME WHEN I TELL YOU THAT THERE ARE MANY OFFICIALS IN THIS
STATE WHO DON’T EVEN KNOW THE DEBT OF GRADITUDE THEY OWE OUR RECIPIENT
FOR THEIR JOBS TODAY. SHE’S BEEN ON CCRA’S NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR
SEVERAL YEARS. SHE CREATED THE DATABASE FOR E-BLASTS TO CCRA OFFICIALS,
WHICH IS AN INVALUABLE TOOL THAT KEEPS US INFORMED.
SHE HAS VOLUNTEERED TO HELP WITH NCRA TESTING DAY FOR OVER A DECADE. AS
A DACR ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER, SHE HAS ATTENDED EVERY MEETING,
GRADUATION AND OPEN HOUSE – A VERY ACTIVE, ENTHUSIASTIC, AND SUPREMELY
QUALIFIED ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER. SHE HAS CONTRIBUTED MANY ARTICLES TO
RAMBLINGS. SHE HAS STRENUOUSLY PROMOTED REALTIME AT HER COURTHOUSE
AND IN THIS STATE. AMONG OTHER SERVICES SHE’S PERFORMED FOR CCRA, SHE WAS
OUR 2008 PRESIDENT, AND WHILE OUR IMMEDIATE PAST-PRESIDENT IN 2009, SHE
BECAME CCRA’S WEBMASTER. I, FOR ONE, CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT A CHORE THAT
MUST BE. SHE’S ALSO BEEN AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE TO CURRENT CCRA
PRESIDENTS SINCE BECOMING A PAST PRESIDENT.
NOW, TODAY IS ONLY ABOUT OUR 2011 DSA RECIPIENT, BUT I TRUST SHE WON’T
MIND, AND I FEEL I’D BE REMISS IF I DIDN’T MENTION HER FATHER. SHE SHARED WITH
MANY OF US IN THIS ROOM A MAN WHO WAS VERY MUCH A BIG PART OF OUR
SUCCESS IN THIS COURT REPORTING PROFESSION. CHUCK JARSTFER NOT ONLY WAS
A FANTASTIC TEACHER, HE COULD ALWAYS MAKE US SMILE. EVEN WHEN WE
HATED THAT DANG MACHINE AND KNEW WE COULD NEVER DO THIS, CHUCK WOULD
MAKE US SMILE, AND HIS PASSION AND ENTHUSIASM FOR THIS PROFESSION WOULD
KEEP US WORKING TOWARD OUR GOAL. MY SISTER DIANE TOLD ME THAT MOST
PARENTS WOULD GO TO A SPORTING EVENT TO WATCH THEIR KIDS, BUT CHUCK WAS
SO PROUD OF HIS LITTLE GIRL, HE’D GO SIT IN HER COURTROOM AND WATCH HER
WITH A BIG SMILE ON HIS FACE. IN OUR MIND’S EYE, WE CAN SEE THAT SMILE ON HIS
FACE NOW.
LUCKILY FOR US, CHUCK’S PASSION AND ENTHUSIASM FOR COURT REPORTING WAS
PASSED ON TO HIS DUAGHTER. HE AND HIS WIFE ALSO INSTILLED IN HER THE
HONESTY, INTEGRITY, AND PROFESSIONALISM WE ALL SEE ON A DAILY BASIS
WORKING WITH OUR 2011 DSA RECIPIENT. I HAVE TO THINK THAT THERE ARE MANY
WORKING REPORTERS, HER STUDENTS, WHO ATTRIBUTE THEIR SUCCESS TO OUR
RECIPIENT AS WE OLDER FOLKS ATTRIBUTE OURS TO CHUCK.
OBVIOUSLY, THE AMOUNT OF TIME SHE’S SPENT WORKING SO HARD FOR THIS
PROFESSION HAS TO TAKE TIME AWAY FROM HER FAMILY, AND ON BEHALF OF ALL
COURT REPORTERS IN THE STATE OF COLORADO, I’D LIKE TO THANK THEM. I’M
PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THEY’VE KINDLY JOINED US TODAY. I DIDN’T FOREWARN
THEM OF THIS, BUT I’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE TO YOU OUR 2011 DSA RECIPIENT’S
MOTHER, ELEANOR; HER HUSBAND, MIKE; HER DAUGHTER JENNIFER; HER DAUGHTER,
HEATHER; SON-IN-LAW, EDDIE; AND GRANDSON, TREAVOR.
WOULD YOU FOLKS KINDLY COME FORWARD?
IF YOU HAVEN’T FIGURED IT OUT BY NOW, I’D LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE
COLORADO COURT REPORTERS ASSOCIATION’S 2011 DISTINGUISHED AWARD WINNER
IS JOYCE MARTIN.
