ARBAN Jean B. Born in Lyons 28th February 1825. Died in Paris 8th April 1889. Professor of the cornet to the Paris Conservatoire. Author of probably the world’s best known tutor book for cornet Arban Method for Cornet.

ARMSTRONG Louis Known as the ‘King’ The best known jazz musician of all time. A true genius on trumpet. Influenced all jazz after 1920. Theme songs ‘Sleepy Time Down South’ ‘On the Sunnyside of the Street’

BAKER Chet USA Trumpeter and singer. Famous for his cool-toned trumpet solos. Worked with Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Film appearances in ‘Hell’s Horizon’ (1955) ‘Stolen Hearts’ (1963)

BAKER Kenny UK Trumpeter. Led Baker’s Dozen. Probably best known for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra. Albums include ‘After Hours’ (Polygon JTL4) and ‘The Kenny Baker Half Dozen’ (Nixa 10) Film appearance in ‘The Small Back Room’ (1948).

BALLIETT Whitney Jazz Critic for the New York Times for more than thirty years and of America’s foremost jazz writers.

BARKER Guy British trumpeter. Played with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1970s. Has recorded with many artists including Stan Tracy, Georgie Fame and Sting. Has won many awards. In recent years has used a flumpet designed by Dave Monette.

BASIE Count USA pianist and bandleader. Theme song ‘One O’ Clock Jump. Hit records include ‘The Kid from Redbank’, ‘Splanky’.

BBC Big Band British based big band directed by Barry Forgie and Jiggs Whigham. Well known through the Monday night radio show ‘Big Band Special’.

BASSO Guido Born in Montreal, Canada. He is one of those rare musicians whose sound is unique and immediately recognizable. He has set the international standard for jazz flugelhorn playing. As a featured soloist with Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass, Guido has performed with The Singers Unlimited, Phil Woods, Mel Torme, and the Hi Lo's. Many of his solos with the Boss Brass have become jazz classics. Has worked with many of the world's top jazz performers including: Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and Diana Krall.

BELL Jack Semi-professional trumpeter in the 1950s / 1960s. Played lead trumpet for a short time in Maynard Ferguson’s British band. Formed the Ferguson-Bell company with Maynard Ferguson to design and market mouthpieces. Died in Florida c.2001.

BELLSON Louis California based drummer and bandleader. Compositions include ‘The Hawk Talks’ and ‘Skin Deep’.

BENTERFA Maurice French mouthpiece designer and manufacturer.

BERGERON Wayne California based trumpeter. Considered one of the world’s very best lead trumpeters. Lead trumpet for Tom Kubis Big Band, Gordon Goodwin’s ‘Big Phat Band’.

BROWN Clifford USA jazz trumpeter and composer. Compositions include ‘Dahood’, ‘Joyspring’ and ‘Sandu’. Co-lead a band with Max Roach. Considered one of the greatest jazz players of all time. Only known footage of Clifford Brown appears in 1955 film ‘Soupy Sales’ Killed in a car crash in 1956 at the age of 26. Recordings include; ‘A Study in Brown’ (Emarcy 814646) ‘The Beginning and the End’ (Columbia/Legacy 66491)

BROWN Lawrence Born 7th March 1905. One of the great swing trombonists. Having spent so much time with the Duke Ellington's Orchestra his playing tends to be underrated. Brown’s initial solos with Ellington upset some of Duke's fans because it was feared that his virtuosity did not fit into a band where primitive effects and mutes were liberally utilized. But over time, Brown established his own place in the Ellington Orchestra.

BROWN Ray USA bass player. Born 13th Oct 1926 Died 2nd July 2002 One of the world’s top bass players. Married at one time to Ella Fitzgerald. Worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson and many more.

BRUBECK Dave Born on 6 December 1920 in Concord, California, is equally distinguished as composer and pianist. His experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. In 1958, Brubeck, drummer Joe Morello, double bassist Eugene Wright, and alto sax player Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet's experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five, introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz. The group recorded and performed together continuously through 1967. In the last 20 years, he has organized several new quartets and continued to appear at the Newport, Monterey, Concord, and Kool Jazz Festivals. Brubeck performed at the White House in 1964 and 1981 and at the 1988 Moscow summit honoring the Gorbachevs. He is the recipient of four honorary degrees, the BMI Jazz Pioneer Award, and the 1988 American Eagle Award presented by the National Music Council.

BUSH Irving R. Mouthpiece designer born and raised in California. Hs played on recordings with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, George Shearing, Barbara Streisand and many more. Author of Artistic Trumpet Technique and Study. Also been design and research consultant for several trumpet manufacturers.

CALVERT Eddie Born in Preston, Lancashire UK on 15th March 1922. Known as the Man with the Golden Trumpet. Hit records included ‘Oh Mein Papa’ ‘Cherry Pink and Blossom White’ and ‘Il Silenzio’. Died in South Africa ins 1978.

CALVERT Lisa Widow of UK trumpeter Eddie Calvert. Known as ‘The Man With the Golden trumpet’. Lisa is resident in Johannesburg where she lived with Eddie before his death.

CHILDERS Buddy Self taught trumpeter. First name Marion. Worked with the bands of Stan Kenton, Benny Carter Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey. Recorded with Frank Sinatra and was musical director for Frank Sinatra Jnr. Albums include ‘Just Buddies’ and ‘It’s What’s Happening Now’.

CICHOWICZ Vince USA trumpeter. Former member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for twenty two years. Professor of trumpet at Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois.

CLAYTON Buck USA trumpeter. One of the great trumpeters to emerge during the swing era. Worked with Count Basie Orchestra, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday. Recordings include: ‘The Classic Swing of Buck Clayton’ (Original Jazz Classics 1709) ‘Buck Clayton in Paris’ (Vogue 68358)

CLAYTON John Internationally respected double bassists, composer and arranger. Resident in California. Studied with Ray Brown. Worked with Count Basie Orchestra. Co-leads the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Received a grammy nomination for his composition ‘Brush This’.

COLIN Charles Performer, teacher, composer and music publisher. Founded New York Brass Conference in 1972. Was a faculty member of Columbia Teacher’s College. Colin was born on September 22, 1913 and died February 7 in Port Chester, New York, at age 86.

COLLINS Lee New Orleans trumpeter / cornetist. Born 1901 died 1960. Worked with Jerry Roll Morton, co-led the Jones-Collins Astoria ‘Hot Eight’. Toured Europe with Mezz Mezzrow.

COLLINS Mary Author. Second wife of Lee Collins, married 1950/51 former name Mary Spriggs. Survived Lee Collins.

CONN Mouthpieces USA mouthpiece and instrument company originally based in Elkhart Indiana.

COOPER Bob One of the greatest West Coast tenor sax players. Joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1945. Stayed with the band until 1951. Married singer June Cristy in 1947. Was one of the busiest players on the LA studio scene.

CORBETT Bryan UK trumpeter resident in Birmingham. Runs his own quartet.
