Joe Ungemah works in the Talent Management and Organization Alignment practice, based in the Minneapolis office. As a registered psychologist, Joe is particularly skilled at translating the science behind selection and development decisions into easy to implement actions. Joe focuses on creating scalable and practical talent management strategies that span competency design, talent acquisition & employer branding, skill & behavioral assessment, leadership & managerial development, and succession & workforce planning.

Role at Towers Watson

As a Director, Joe is responsible for leading and managing global, large-scale projects across the spectrum of talent management activities. He also is the practice lead for strategic talent acquisition and a subject matter expert on talent assessment, talent analytics, competency design, performance management, leadership effectiveness, career management, and organizational alignment. Some recent engagements include:

■  Realignment of staff to a new operating model as a result of changes in organizational strategy, reductions in workforce or M&A activity, with a particular focus on legal defensibility and identification of capability gaps.

■  Creation of enterprise-wide behavioral, functional and leadership competency models that are later embedded into succession planning, career paths, performance management and workforce planning activities.

■  Use of assessment methodologies for broad-based and executive-level hiring within an end-to-end process that identifies candidates with the best fit to job and organizational requirements.

■  Design and delivery of leadership development programs that provide a mixture of traditional content, on-the-job experience, action learning and coaching.

Education and Credentials

Joe is a frequent commentator in the business press and is the author of Misplaced Talent: A Guide to Better People Decisions published in 2015. He has a second book due for publication in 2016.

Prior to Willis Towers Watson, Joe led professional services practices for CEB in the U.S., Ireland and Australia. He has also acted as an internal change manager in the financial services industry and a HR business partner in manufacturing.

Joe holds a doctorate in occupational psychology and MBA from the University of Oxford.
