Course Scope:

This one-year course provides students with a rigorous study of Euclidean geometry. It incorporates problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of transformational geometry, trigonometry, measurement, and probability. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of mathematical tools and technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

Course Goals:

1.  To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. [CCSS]

2.  To experiment with transformations in the plane, understand congruence in terms of rigid motions; prove geometric theorems, and make geometric constructions. [CCSS: G.CO]

3.  To understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations, prove theorems involving similarity; and define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles.
[CCSS: G.SRT]

4.  To understand and apply theorems about circles; and find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles. [CCSS: G.C]

5.  To translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section; and use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically. [CCSS: G.GPE]

6.  To explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems; and visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. [CCSS: G.GMD]

7.  To apply geometric concepts in modeling situations. [CCSS: G.MG]

8.  To understand independence and conditional probability and use them to interpret data; and use the rules of probability to compute probabilities of compound events in a uniform probability model. [CCSS: S.CP]

9.  To use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions. [CCSS: S.MD]

Textbooks

The following text(s) will be utilized in this course:

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Geometry, 2015

Student Supplies

Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year:

§  1 Composition Notebook

§  Pencils

§  Erasers

Additionally, it is recommended students have the following supplies:

§  Drawing Compass

§  Protractor

§  Ruler

Tardy Policy

Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, the Legacy High School Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced. On the first and second tardy, the student will be warned; on the third tardy, the parent will be contacted; on the fourth tardy, a detention will be assigned; on the fifth and all subsequent tardies, the student will be sent to the deans’ office and placed on a Required Parent Conference.

Grading Policy

·  Grading Scale: 90% - 100% A

80% - 89% B

70% - 79% C

60% - 69% D

Below 60% F

·  Grades will not be rounded.

·  Grading will follow the following percentages:

o  Homework: 30%

o  Classwork / Quizzes: 30%

o  Tests: 40%

·  Classroom participation will count towards citizenship.

·  A notebook will be maintained for the course. It is expected that the notebook be neat and organized and will generally follow the organization of the teacher. Graded classwork assignments will be included in the notebook, so it is important that the notebook be kept in a safe location. If necessary, lave the notebook in the classroom for safekeeping.

·  Homework will be assigned 2-3 times per week, for a total estimated completion time of 90 minutes per week.

·  Semester Grades: 45% Quarter 1/3 Grade

45% Quarter 2/4 Grade

10% Semester Examination

·  All assignments must meet an appropriate standard of neatness and organization. If any assignment requires a written portion, then spelling, grammar and punctuation will be taken into account when grading.

Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance

·  Make-up procedures-

• After an absence, a student will be expected to check for missing work. Missing work for the week will be located on the wall adjacent to the door in pockets with labels for each day of the week. Older work will be located in boxes on the side of the room. All graded work will be listed on the calendars on the wall adjacent to the door.

• To obtain for work the current week, take it from the appropriate pocket. For older work, look on the calendar for the assignment; then, search the missing work box, organized by date, for that assignment. Students must obtain make-up work within three days of an absence, unless other arrangements with the teachers are made.

• Students are responsible for getting/requesting make-up work and scheduling before or after school to make-up tests/quizzes.

·  Hours of Availability- I will be available in my room from 6:30 until 7:00 in the morning and from 1:25 until 2:30 in the afternoon. If I have previously made commitments, such as a conference, the class will be notified beforehand.

Attendance

After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an “F” for the course.

Classroom Behavior Expectations

·  No gum, food, drink, makeup, or lotions are allowed. Makeup, lotion, or any other material causing a distraction will be confiscated.

·  Regular phone calls home will be made if you have an F in class. You will be given a grade report on Friday and will have until Monday afternoon to bring your grade up.

·  If the teacher is speaking, do not speak unless you have been called upon. Do not interrupt others if they are speaking.

·  Follow group rules when assigned to a group. Do not speak outside of your group when working.

·  Enter the room quietly, pick up materials, your notebook, and begin on the warm-up quietly.

·  No electronics are allowed, unless you are given permission (the cell phone card will be flipped to the green side). Phones / earbuds not being used for an activity for this class may be confiscated.

•  Legacy Progressive Discipline Plan for Minor Infractions

•  Step 1: Student Warning/Conference with Student

•  Step 2: Phone Call to Parents

•  Step 3: Teacher Detention

•  Step 4: Deans’ Referral

·  You are expected to have your notebook and a pencil with eraser daily.

·  Please do not be tardy to class. If you are late 30 minutes, it will count as an absence. Tardies will follow the following progressive discipline:

•  Legacy Progressive Discipline Plan for Tardies

•  Step 1: Student Warning/Conference with Student

•  Step 2: Student Warning /Phone Call to Parents

•  Step 3: Deans’ Referral

If you have no tardies during a quarter, you will be given 3 homework passes for the following quarter.

o  If you are given a corridor pass, keep it visible and return it to the teacher when you have returned to class. Sign the log when leaving and returning.

o  If you need to use the restroom, you will use the bright orange pass marked with 713. You must use the bright orange restrooms located in the 700/800 hallway is you are using the restroom from this class. Sign the log when leaving and returning.

o  Take care of your property and the school’s property. Damaging school property or that of another student will be met with disciplinary consequences.

Citizenship will be determined as follows and will be based upon behavior and participation in class:

O (Outstanding): The student has no unexcused absences and no tardies. He /she participates in class on a regular basis and has no missing assignments. Additionally, the student has not received a call home or a detention for misbehavior, missing work, or grades.

S (Satisfactory): The student has no unexcused absences has a minimum of 1 tardy. He / she participates in class on a regular basis and has not received a phone call home for missing work or grades. He / she has not received a detention for misbehavior, missing work, or grades.

N (Needs Improvement): The student has a minimum of 2 tardies. The student has received a detention or has warranted a phone call home for missing work or grades. He / she participates in class on a semiregular basis.

U (Unsatisfactory): The student has been referred to the dean for behavior or tardies.

Please complete this page, remove from packet and return to school by September 13, 2017.
