the buckingham, SQLC FOUNDATION announce donations to the Alzheimer’s association

HOUSTON, March 25, 2009: In 2008, senior residents of The Buckingham retirement community launched a determined fundraising and awareness campaign to end Alzheimer’s disease. Their efforts paid off when they donated more than $19,000 to the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association at the annual Memory Walk, making the community the largest corporate fundraiser for the second year in a row.

To extend the impact of the fundraising efforts by The Buckingham, Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation (SQLC), parent company of The Buckingham, recently made a 50 percent matching donation of $9,559.50 to the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, bringing the donation total to $28,678.50. Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation made the donation through the organization’s new foundation, the SQLC Foundation.

“The SQLC Foundation is pleased to make this contribution to support local programs and services provided by the staff of the Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association,” said Charles B. Brewer, president and CEO of SQLC. “We are very proud of the efforts of our residents at The Buckingham, and happy to honor them with this matching gift.”

In accepting the donation, Richard Elbein, president of the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said, “We are delighted to partner with The Buckingham and their parent company, SQLC. Their support and generosity will truly help the Alzheimer’s Association in the mission to raise awareness for and end Alzheimer’s disease.”

In addition to the donation made to the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the SQLC Foundation matched 50 percent of the totals raised for local chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association by The Buckingham sister communities Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin and Edgemere in Dallas. In total, statewide, the SQLC Foundation and SQLC communities donated more than $50,000 to help the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

The Buckingham is Houston’s premier life care community located in the heart of the Memorial neighborhood. Situated on a 17-acre site along Buffalo Bayou at 8580 Woodway Drive, The Buckingham offers resort-style services and amenities for active, independent seniors, as well as all levels of health care services onsite at The Plaza at The Buckingham. The community features 205 independent living residences; 42 private assisted living apartments; 16 private memory support apartments; and 60 private skilled nursing suites.

The Buckingham is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit community owned by Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation (SQLC), a Texas-based nonprofit organization which also owns Edgemere in Dallas, Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin, and The Stayton at Museum Way under development in Fort Worth.
