Pinckney families—

Our Hero of the Week is: Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges was the first African American child to attend an all white public elementary school in the South. Several years prior to this, the Supreme Court found segregation in schools illegal per Brown v. Board of Education. Federal Marshalls escorted Ruby to school during that first year to ensure she was safe and allowed to go to all white school. There were many protestors who did not want black and white students to attend school together. The first few months of school, the white staff members refused to teach her and parents withdrew their white children from the school. She continued to attend the school and work with Mrs. Henry, a white teacher. The next year, 2nd grade, the classrooms were fully integrated with both white and black students.

The movie comes out this coming weekend and if you are planning to go during opening weekend (November 17-19), we'd love for you to use this link via Fandango so that Pinckney can earn $1 for every ticket sold.
