Kindergarten Homework Guide

Dear Parents:

In order to complete this first homework packet with as little confusion as possible, please keep this guide handy to clear up any questions you may have.

Weekly homework packets are to be completed and submitted with your signature the following Monday.

Here is a guide to homework. Please keep this in a safe place for reference:

Homework / Description
Letter Notebook / Each week, the letter notebook will be assigned on Monday and is to be returned on Friday. For each letter, have your child look through magazines or newspapers to find pictures of objects that begin with that letter. Your child should cut, glue, and write a label for the picture independently or with minimal guidance. Please allow your child to sound out the words and you can write the correct spelling underneath. Please refer to the inside cover of the letter notebook for more detailed instructions.
Reading Log / Read to your child (or later on in the school year, have your child read to you) for 10-15 minutes each night. After reading, adult family members can write the title and author on the reading log. [If your child is willing and able to do the writing him/herself, feel free to let them do it!]
Your child may choose to read a book from home or one that s/he receives from our lending library. It’s okay if your child chooses to read the same book for multiple days. But please note I expect the children to select from different genres during the week.
Please let your child rate each reading experience by coloring in the face that best shows what s/he thinks about the book or poem.
Please refer to the “guide to asking questions” for ideas of what to ask your child about the book. These questions are specifically listed to aid in comprehension and retelling.
Reading All Star / Students read a book (separate from their reading log books) and illustrate their favorite part of that book on the book report sheet provided. Illustrations should contain as many details as possible.
Math / Students are given Math assignments to complete as a review of the previous week’s lessons. In addition, students are expected to spend some time each week going on the math website to practice math skills.
Handwriting / Please be sure your child is writing his/her name and the letter of the week at least 3 times each on the Fundations paper provided. Please ensure your child is making the proper letter formations on the Fundations paper, as provided in your back to school packet.

Remember to return the letter notebook each Friday.

Remember to return the homework packet each Monday, completed with your signature.

Thank you. Please let me know if you have any questions.
