II. Business Concept
Description of the Industry
Curriculum expansion, increased identification of learning disabled students, increased classroom numbers, and reduced recess time, are but a few of the challenges facing today’s classroom teacher. Cris observes 30% of primary classroom children have attention problems, with energy levels ranging from charged to sleepy, and 20% have printing and reading delays. While the cause of these neurological disorders is speculative at this time, the explosion of technology, and subsequent sedentary and sensory deprived states of children, are without a doubt causally linked. Children need to move, and can be taught to move their bodies to enhance learning. Through identifying and changing energy levels, and learning new body techniques for printing and reading, learning becomes fun and academic performance is optimized, accomplished through the use of SCOT’s unique programs Zone’in and Move’in.
Program Descriptions
Zone’in for Schools and Zone’in for Home: Derived from Sensory Integration theory and designed for grades K-6, theZone’in Program optimizes attention by helping children to understand more about their body energy. If their energy is charged and hyperactive, or sleepy and zoned out, they can’t start, sustain or finish activities. By watching the Zone’in DVD, and using posters, Zone-O-Meters, and sensory motor based Zone Tools and Techniques, children learn to “Switch On” to get “Zone’in and Learn!”
Move’in for Schools and Move’in for Home: Based on Fine Motor Development theory and designed for grades K-3, the Move’in Program improves printing and reading by providing a classroom or home based individualized assessment and intervention. Move’in takes children on a “Printing Adventure!” by watching a DVD, playing the Ready, Set, Move’in board game, and using the Play’in the Lines computer program to create customized journal and worksheets. Move’in also comes with a database that tracks progress and produces progress reports for education plans.
Unplug’in for Schools and Unplug’in for Home: As children travel through the four dimensions of self, others, nature and spirit, they learn new skills and build confidence necessary to reduce their use of technology.
Zone’in, Move’in and Unplug’in programs are cost effective as schools, homes or professionals need only buy oneof each kit to provide a yearly individualized assessmentand intervention for every elementary child. Zone’in and Move’in programs reduce teacher time as they are student lead, thus improving motivation. Both programs come with fun DVD’s that contain informative workshops for teachers, parents and professionals.
Zone’in for Teens and Zone’in for Corporate are two programs to come soon.
Program Evaluation and Research
Zone’in: Two studies are underway, one at St. Anne’s Academy in Kamloops and one with the Kamloops School District regarding the efficacy of the Zone’in Program to improve children’s ability to start, sustain and finish academic tasks; results due January and August of 2008 respectively.
Move’in: Masters level research studies completed by four UBC Occupational Therapy students showing Move’in Program improves printing output speed.
III. Marketing Plan
Zone’in, Move’in and Unplug’in for School kits are purchased by schools, PACS, counselors and therapists (Occupational and Physical Therapists) as part of yearly school curriculum; circulated through each grade K-6 classroom. Play’in the Lines printing program will also be marketed to adult literacy and ESL programs. Risks
- School kit purchase requires consensus of school based team (unless will be used by only one teacher).
- Increasing interest rates limit expenditures as personal mortgage of $200,000 was used to finance company.
- As both programs are unique in that they are all inclusive kits and kid driven (as opposed to requiring teacher instruction) there is no known competition, although the following programs may be viewed by some people as comparable:
- The Alert Program (a book, not a program)
- Henry OT (an assortment of handouts, videos and products)
- Hand Writing Without Tears (an assortment of workbooks)
