The objective of the Criminology Internship Program is to provide an opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience working in a criminal justice agency. While the emphasis of the course is oriented towards gaining practical experience, students are expected to incorporate past course work into their internship experience. This will be manifested in the form of a journal and final paper.

In addition to the valuable hands on experience and academic credited received, many students are fortunate enough to be offered employment in the agency where they served their internship. Doing an internship is an excellent way to gain future employment or get to know people who can write meaningful letters of recommendation for you.

An orientation meeting for the course will be held on September 5th (Tuesday) at 5:00 P.M. in BEH S 111. Please plan on attending.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to spend 100 hours during the semester in a criminal justice agency. In addition, students must keep a chronological account of their activities in a journal and write a short research paper on a topic related to their internship.

Contract Required

Please note that you must sign a contract between you and the University of Utah that addresses issues of risk, liability, and indemnification. You can access this contract on Canvas in the files section. Please turn the contract into the Department of Sociology, Rm 301 BEHS C/O Larry L. Bench Ph.D. I cannot give you a final grade for the course without this contract. Please bring a signed copy of this contract with you to the orientation meeting.

Select an agency from the list below and setup an appointment with the contact person. Once the agency has agreed to sponsor your internship you should start attending the agency on a regular basis. Do not wait for the orientation meeting to start the process of finding an agency for your internship. Please contact the instructor if you need assistance in finding an agency.

*Students can do their internship in an agency that does not appear on the list subject to approval from the instructor.

Course Objectives:

·  Gain experience in working in a criminal justice agency

·  Understand the role and function of a specific agency to the overall criminal justice system

·  Gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges faced by the clientele that the agency serves

·  Assess how effective the agency is in meeting its goals and objectives as part of the larger criminal justice system

·  Use experience gained as a result of the internship experience to write a research paper on a subject related to the internship experience

Breakdown of final grade:

Fifty percent of your final grade will be determined based on the recommendation of your agency supervisor. Recommendations are received verbally by the instructor from the agency supervisor at the end of the semester.

Fifteen percent of your final grade will be based on a journal submitted at the end of the semester. Assignment: Prepare a journal based on the experiences you have had during your internship. Your journal can include (but is not limited to) personal observations, descriptions of particular events, a discussion of issues related to your agency or a combination of these components. Whichever format you choose, your journal should represent a chronology of events that have occurred in your internship and be a minimum of 10 pages (double spaced).

Required Format for Journal

The title page must include your name, your email address, agency, current supervisor, supervisor’s phone number, email address, and mailing address. You will not be given a grade in the class without this information.

Ten percent of your grade will be based on a summary of your internship experience. Assignment: Note the strengths and weaknesses of your internship and include a recommendation as to whether future interns should be placed in the agency. Justify your response. This section should occur at the end of your journal. Your journal must be typed.

Twenty-five percent of your final grade will be based on a final paper. Assignment: Prepare a 7-10-page research paper on a topic related to your internship experience. Try and pick a topic you were introduced to as a result of your internship experience that you would like to explore further. Your paper should be typed (double-spaced), spell checked, and conform to contemporary grammatical rules and conventions. In addition, your paper should follow the stylistic guidelines contained in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition). This manual is available at the bookstore or can be checked out at the library. Formatting information is also available on the internet.

Required Format

Your research paper must follow the Required Format. Papers that don’t follow this format will be marked down.

A.  Abstract

B.  Introduction

C.  Literature Review

D.  Discussion

E.  References

F.  Appendices (if applicable)

You can find examples of a journal, research paper, and proper formatting of the references in the files section of the course on Canvas.

The journal and research paper are due on December 4th (Monday) by 4:00 P.M. at the Sociology office (913 BEH S). Emailed assignments will not be accepted.

A “Q and A” document about the internship can be found in the files section of Canvas.

Park City Police Department

435-615-5575

Park City Police Department is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our Victim Advocate Program. The Victim Advocate Program is designed to assist victims of violent crime through helping them access resources (including counseling, group therapy, food resources, etc.), design safety plans, arrange shelter placement, and help the victim through the legal process. We work closely with several nonprofits within Park City and utilize a community-based approach. There are several ways volunteers can contribute: Court Advocate, In-Office Advocate, and Crisis Response Team Member (see attached documents for details). All volunteers complete a 40-hour online training and attend periodic trainings (monthly, usually on a Saturday morning). Before beginning as a volunteer interested individuals must fill out an application and pass a background check.
