eading literature is always more fun when accompanied by a project that brings the dry ink to juicy life. Select one of the following projects listed and complete all work that will lead to a high-quality final product. With this project worth 50 points (test level), doing a complete job will make a difference in your grade. Criteria are as follows:

A.  Completion of time table charting project progress – 2 hrs. total (10 pts.)

B.  Evidence of rough drafts and/or collection of research materials (10 pts.)

C.  Final product that reflects knowledge of the themes in the novel and the ability to relate these themes to today’s society (30 pts.)

1.  In a well-developed essay, give evidence to support the idea of “Holden as a Savior”. Include the symbolism of the title and how this relates to Holden’s thinking. As support, give many examples of his savior-like thoughts and actions. Also, include support from critical essays written about the novel (research necessary here). This information is available in the LMC and on the Internet. (at least one page typed).

2.  Watch the film Good Will Hunting (starring Robin Williams and Matt Damon) and write a comparison/contrast essay that shows the similarities and differences between Holden Caulfield and Will Hunting. This essay should include specific support from both the movie and the novel. Refer to # 359-360 in Writer’s INC. (at least one page typed).

3.  Create a series of poems that concentrate on the following themes: Loneliness, loss of innocence, being trapped between childhood and adulthood, finding oneself in a changing environment, materialism, and concept of “the fall”. (5 poems in all).

4.  Create a series of artwork that reflects the themes listed in #3. (5 pieces in all).

5.  Write an essay that identifies examples of media that express rebellion against society and the frustration of an adolescent in transition. Explain how Holden would feel about these examples. (at least one page typed).

6.  Write a diagnosis of Holden’s mental/emotional condition. The document shouild include a description of the patient’s background, description of the problem, and a recommendation for treatment (at least one page typed).

7.  Create a video that would encourage adolescents to be resilient rather than rebellious. Research resilient qualities and resources and incorporate this data into your video – creativity is encouraged! (at least 10 minutes in length).

8.  Research J.D. Salinger’s life, accomplishments, and style (in writing). Using some of Salinger’s recurring themes in his writing, write a short story that mimics his style, characters, and themes. Again, creativity is encouraged! (at least one page typed).

9.  Plot out Holden’s whereabouts while he is in New York City on a map. Research the places that are referred to in the text and find out where they are located. In the end, you should have a drawn (or computer copied) map of NYC with a trail following Holden chronologically.
