Big Bang Theorist a ‘Blast’ at Woodlawn

Students of Woodlawn’s senior chemistry and physics classes were today lucky enough to be treated to a lecture by Australian scientist Ivan Reid. Dr. Reid, originally from Byron Bay, spoke to students about his work which has seen him travel abroad.

He has been involved in countless scientific research projects, ranging from work at Mawson Base in Antarctica to the Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor in Sydney. Dr. Reid currently is based in Brunel University, London, though spends much of his time working at CERN, a nuclear testing facility on the outskirts of Geneva, Switzerland. As part of the ‘European Organization for Nuclear Research’, Mr. Reid’s current work ranges from delving into the secrets of the ‘Big Bang’ theory to improving world communications through the use of nuclear technology.

Woodlawn students were fortunate enough to hear of his works in a one hour lecture at the college. He stressed the importance of scientific research and further went to add that there were countless career areas in the field.

“Everywhere you go there are Australian scientists. Australia certainly ranks well in regard to scientific experiments and research and there are some gifted minds at work here and abroad”
Mr. Reid’s current work could possibly see him and his large team at CERN be nominated for a Nobel prize, a mighty feat from a young boy who originally grew up on the North Coast.
St John’s Woodlawn was the only school Mr. Reid was able to address on his trip to Australia.
