Purpose:
Activate prior knowledge
Strategy:
ABC Brainstorm
Procedure:
  1. Present the topic of the brainstorm to students.
  2. Students work individually thinking of as many words as they can that are associated with the topic and write the words beside the appropriate letters.
  3. After a few minutes, let the students pair up or work in small groups to fill in blank letters they have not yet completed/
  4. Allow students to share with the entire class the possible terms they have.
/ Purpose:
  1. Make connections with text during reading
  2. Enhance comprehension of written material through short readings and oral discussion

Say Something
Procedure:
  1. Choose a text for the students to read and have them work in pairs.
  2. Designate a stopping point for reading
  3. Have students read to the stopping point and then”say something” about the text to their partners.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until they finish reading the text
/ Purpose:
  1. Monitors comprehension
  2. Summarizing text
  3. Using mental imagery
Strategy:
One Pager
Procedure:
  1. Students should be divided into groups of around 4 and given a blank piece of paper.
  2. Give students these directions:
  1. Draw and image that represents something in the chapter.
  2. Choose five key words from the text and place them anywhere around the picture.
  3. Choose two statements directly from the text. These statements should have power and meaning. Write these statements at the bottom of the page.
  4. Look at the image, key words, and statements. Write a summarizing/theme statement that expresses the meaning on your page.
