Chapter 1- The Nature of Science and p. 629

Key concepts: All the steps of scientific method. Know how the steps in order and be able to identify different types of variables. Know various measurements: mass, length, volume etc and the tools used to determine each. Parts and how to use a microscope. Be able to distinguish between observation and inferences as well as accuracy and precision.

Vocabulary: control, dependent variable, independent variable, hypothesis, conclusion model, scientific method, mass, volume, weight, observations, inferences, accuracy and precision

Chapter 2- Cells and Mitosis

Key concepts: Know the major organelles and their function of both plant and animal cells. Cell division is responsible for repair and growth.

Vocabulary: cell, cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, vacuole, cytoplasm, chlorophyll, DNA, chromosomes

Chapter 3 Plant Reproduction

Key concepts: Know the two types of reproduction, asexual and sexual. Main parts of the flower, how seeds develop into plant, parts of a seed and their function. Key concepts: How scientists understand traits to be inherited. That genes are sections of DNA that determine certain traits. Mutations of the DNA are permanent changes and can have negative or positive effects on the organism. Scientists use Punnet squares to predict the probability of a trait being passed on. Pedigree charts are used to study genetic history of a family.

Vocabulary: Gene, mutations, chromosome, dominant and recessive genes, allele, phenotype, genotype, Punnett square, pedigree chart, heredity, genetics
