ABILENE, TXVOL. 9, NO. 5SEPT-OCT. 2001

WELCOME

Let’s extend a warm USPFO Welcome to our newest members:

New Member & Family

The USPFO is always open for expansion in membership.

We enjoy having new additions to the great, big, old USPFO Family. Since we are indeed a growing Filipinocommunity, let’s try to recruit more people! Loyd Albritton has forms in handy for our convenience.

Good Luck!

Let’s wish the following college-bound students much luck w/their future endeavors:

Joanne Dispo & Tracy Washinsky – who will begin their college careers at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX

Tonya Huddleston – who will start hers at the Abilene campus location of Cisco Junior College

Heavenly Pittman – who will attend University of North Texas in Denton.

Bon Voyage

Richard Champagne left recently for Korea to attend to military business & will be gone for 1 yr. We all here wish him a prosperous stay there & a safe journey back to the States. While he is overseas, let us reassure his wife, Beverly & son, Joseph, that we are here for them.

The Induction Ball, which was held on Sat., 21 Jul. at the Marine Bldg. in Dyess AFB, was a huge success! There was a great turnout, w/approx. 75 families in attendance. Among the festivities included an auction for BBQ to take home, plus tickets to the Texas Ranger vs. New York Yankees baseball game on Sun., 20 Aug. Charlemagne & Mariam Festejo performed an awesome number in their Filipino attire. Elaine Dispo, Donny Huddleston, & Estrella Dispo were recognized for their outstanding efforts by being presented w/Certificates of Appreciation by Denny Svab.

 ELAINE’S THANX 

Some of you don’t realize how far I’ve come in my involvement w/the USPFO. When it was first established in 1992, I was only a jr. high school student & initially felt like I was “dragged” to the meetings & functions. Since I started college, I took on a new perspective & broadened my interests w/this organization. Now that I serve on the Dance Group board as secretary in addition to working on the Mabuhay , I realize that I can indeed participate in the USPFO while enjoying doing so. Today, I believe I have taken an active role alongside my own parents, Jun & Estrella, both of whom have certainly made their marks.

Originally, I went into the Mabuhay staff thinking that it would definitely be a thankless job. I am glad to say that it has not been. In fact, I’ve received many pats on the back for continuing to enact my job. I know now that my commitment is well worth it when I see the proud faces of fellow members, who happen to be like family to me. The time I devote to helping put each issue together pays off b/c my passion - & potential career-path - involves delivering the news to interested audiences.

I doubt I would have found myself contributing to the USPFO if it weren’t for the 2 following men who’ve encouraged me. They both have served as USPFO President. Thus, their urging me to join the newsletter staff or board-of-directors means a great deal to me…Thank you, Loyd Albritton & Denny Svab for helping me get where I am here today. Y’all are wonderful mentors!

Proud Papa

Gil Castillo is a grandfather-to-be, once again! His newlywed daughter, Roni, & her hubby, Moses Power are soon to be parents. Moses just graduated from Angelo State University, so he will be joining Roni in Dallas just in time to witness the birth of their child. Gil & his wife, Ramona, are already grandparents, yet they are looking forward to another grandchild from the “baby” of the family, for Roni is the last of five children. Joy is in our prayers for the Castillo-Power families.

Gil asked me to add that the baby is a girl, & the proud parents plan to name her Serena Diane, & she is expected to arrive Sept. 26.
