INFORMATION

Welcome to Summerbridge Cambridge: a Breakthrough Program!

SUMMERBRIDGE/BREAKTHROUGH INFORMATION

Summerbridge/Breakthrough is a successful national education program that provides a path to college for middle schoolers with high potential but limited opportunities while promoting careers in education. Using a students-teaching-students model, Summerbridge Cambridge provides dynamic, tuition-free academic programs in the summer and year round. Our younger students gain the skills and motivation to succeed in rigorous high school programs. Meanwhile, Summerbridge Cambridge empowers older students to teach – every member of our teaching faculty is a high school or college student. Teachers gain hands-on experience in every aspect of education, while also receiving training and support from Summerbridge’s full-time staff. Our student to teacher ratio fosters close relationships, mentoring and fun!

SUMMERBRIDGE STUDENTS

Summerbridge Cambridge accepts students as rising sixth graders. The program requires a two-year, year-round commitment from its middle school students. The summer is the central part of our program due to the fact that we have the kids all day. Nonetheless we strive to enrich and support our students during the school year. Many of our kids attend our after-school program that meets once a week and features fun academic classes and homework help. In addition to this, many of our kids, due to a desire to perform better in school and learn more, ask to be paired with one of our tutors.

TUTORING

Tutors commit 1-2 hours per week and must be able to make a weekly commitment. While we facilitate the entire process, flexibility and initiative on the part of the tutor is critical. Once you are accepted and paired with a student, details like day, time, location, and subject/skill focus will be determined. Tutors, while primarily functioning as academic helpers, are also role models and we are looking for motivated high school and college students who will take this role very seriously. While the meetings with the students are on your own time, Edwin and/or Andy will check in with you and the student periodically to see how things are going.
