ATypI appoints new country delegate from Germany
March 21, 2004, New Jersey: Today the Board of Directors of the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) announced that it has appointed a new country delegate for Germany, the designer Jürgen Weltin, replacing educator Jay Rutherford who has moved to Italy. The chairman of the ATypI Country Delegates, Henrik Birkvig, who teaches typography at The Graphic Arts Institute of Denmark, said, “We are very happy to have Jürgen Weltin join our team of Country Delegates. His experience and involvement in the German graphic arts will be very valuable for us.”
The ATypI Country Delegates produce an annual report under the direction of Mr. Birkvig on the state of type, typography, books, events and design for all of the member countries. This report is provided free for the members of the Association and to attendees at the annual Conferences. The Country Delegates also facilitate communication and action with other ATypI members.
“I feel honoured to have been appointed ATypI's country delegate for Germany and am looking forward to ATypI's future,” said Mr. Weltin.
Jürgen Weltin was born in 1969 in Constance, the southernmost town in Germany. He studied graphic design in Würzburg and in Bournemouth Poole, England. His first typeface Finnegan was part of his diploma in 1995 and after completion it was published by Linotype Library in 2000. He worked as a graphic and type designer in Stuttgart and London, and designed many corporate typefaces and exclusive typefaces for The Foundry in London as well as numerous logotypes for large international corporations.
As of 2002 he is working at his own studio doing new type projects (www.typematters.net) and he is a part time teacher for typography. In 1999 he was awarded the D&AD award for the telephone book typeface Yellow for British Telecommunication plc. and in 2001 he received Certificates of Excellence in Type Design both for Linotype Finnegan and Yellow in the bukva:raz! international type design competition.
