Meerkats are mammals that move and live in the midst of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. They grow to about 12 inches tall and weigh about two pounds. Despite their small size, meerkats have impressive survival skills. They can live without drinking water. They obtain the moisture they need by eating melons and other fruit as well as roots. These adaptable creatures are also immune to the venom of poisonous snakes and scorpions, so they can kill and eat them.

Meerkats live in large groups called gangs or mobs. Up to thirty meerkats make up the typical gang. Members stick to each other like glue, creating a tight family unit. They live in burrows usually dug by other animals. The burrows have multiple entrances and exits as well as tunnels that lead to various chambers. Meerkats also dig thousands of holes, called bolt holes, for quick escapes from predators. When a predator is near, a sea of meerkats pours into the nearest bolt hole to safety.
