Speller’s Choice Homework Menu
Below you will find a menu of spelling activities to be used for homework to help learn the weekly spelling words. The spelling list will go home each Friday, which will contain 10 weekly spelling words, 3high frequency words, and 3 story vocabulary words – for a total of 16 words. Please choose one activity each night (a different activity each night). Please write the name of the activity at the top of the page and then complete the activity. There will be a spelling test each Friday!
1. Rainbow Words: Write your words with 3 different colors.
2. Fancy Fingers: use your fanciest writing to write your words with curly, dotty, or other fancy letters!
3. Spelling Cheer: Pretend you’re a cheerleader and cheer out your words to an adult. Write “Spelling Cheer” on your Speller’s Choice Homework page.
4. Computer Fun: Use your computer to type your words. Use Differentfonts and makeit really fun! Be sure to print it out and bring it attached to your homework.
5. Silly Story: Write a silly story using your spelling words.
6. Silly Sentences: Use all of your words to make 10 silly sentences.
7. Musical Words: Sing your spelling words to the tune of your favorite song. Write “Musical Words” on your Speller’s Choice Homework page.
8. Other handed: If you are right handed write your words with your left hand. If you are left handed, write with your right!
9. Magazine Cut-ups: Look through a magazine. Cut out letters and paste them to make 10 of your spelling words.
10. Choo-Choo Words: Write all of your words, one right after the other, using a different color for each word to make your word train.
11. Scrambled Words: Scramble up the letters of each word and then write the correct words next to the scrambled letters. For extra fun, see if an adult will write the words scrambled and you unscramble them! Example: draw ward
12. Outstanding Words: Write your words 2 times each in your neatest and most outstanding writing!
13. Question & Answers: Write a question for each spelling word. Then answer each question using the spelling word.
14. Rhymes Writing: Write your spelling words and next to them write a rhyming word. Underline your spelling word. Example: make - cake
15. Scrabble Writing: Choose 10 spelling words. Use the scrabble letters to add up how much each word is worth. Example: way 4+1+4=9
16. Put the words in ABC order.
17. Have a parent, friend, or family member give you a practice test.
18. Look up 5 of the words in a dictionaryand write their definition.
19. Write a friendly letterto a friend using 6 of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words. Use the friendly letter format.
20. Choose 5 of your words. Write down the word and a synonym(word that means the same) to match it.
21. Choose 5 of your words. Write down the word and an antonym(word that means the opposite) to match it.
22. Choose 5 of your words. Write down the word and a homophone(two words that are spelled differently but sound the same – right and write) to match it.
23. Write your spelling words. Underline the long vowelon all the spelling words.
24. Write your spelling words. Underline the consonant digraph(a pair of letters representing a single speech sound, as whin whale) on all the spelling words.
25. Write your spelling words. Underline the vowel digraph(a pair of vowels representing a single speech sound, as eain meat) on all the spelling words.
26. Write your spelling words. Underline the blends(two letters that make one sound – th) on all the spelling words.
27. Make up your ownspelling activity. Remember to include the rules.
28. Write your spelling words. Underline all nouns.
29. Write your spelling words. Underline all verbs(action words).
30. Write your spelling words. Underline all adjectives(describing words).
31. Find 5 words with a multiple meaning. Write down the word and both of the meanings.
32. Write your spelling words. Underline the prefixin all of the words with a prefix.
33. Write your spelling words. Underline the suffixin all of the words with a suffix.
34. Choose 5 words and write them in a SUPER sentence. Use describing words to add detail (who, what, where, when, why)
35. Write your spelling words. Circle any words with two or more syllables.
36. Write your spelling words. Add syllable breaks(little = lit-tle).
37. Write your spelling words. Make the word a plural(baby = babies).
