Further particulars: MaSTComputing Officer

The School of Marine Science & Technology (MaST) is a highly demanding environment to provide IT service and support in. You will encounter a variety of specialist and standard equipment, including computers attached to lab instruments, and must be ready to work on cutting edge systems. Computational science and engineering are growing fields in the school, with work on areas such as High Performance and High Throughput Computing increasing. For these reasons, a background in one or more additional relevant areas such as batch queue management, Linux, application development, computer-instrument interfacing, data visualization and numerical computation would be very advantageous. A qualification in physical or life science (e.g. chemistry, physics or biology) at A-level or beyond would also be beneficial.

As well as its main facilities in Newcastle, MaST has facilities at Cullercoats and Blyth, and you will occasionally be required to travel to these locations, so holding a driving licence would be desirable. You will be involved in changes in how IT is delivered in the School, as we anticipate change and growth in the School, and in the wider Faculty of Science, AgricultureEngineeringTechnology. You will be involved in day to day tasks around the provision of Windows PCdesktop and other basic IT services, as well as provision of more specialist IT equipment and services and longer term projects.

The role will suit a highly flexible, self-starting IT professional who is a good generalist and excellent problem solver, has strong IT, communications and organisational skills, and who has good attention to detail and is comfortable in a customer facing role dealworking with conflicting priorities among a wide range of University staff and students.

In keeping with our “centrally managed, locally delivered” approach, you will take day to day direction from MaST, with overall management, steering and governance from the IT Service. MaST is part of the University’s Faculty of Science, Agriculture & Engineering (SAgE), and you will be a member of the SAgE IT Team. You may therefore be asked to work in any of the Faculty’s units from time to time, as well as with staff from elsewhere in the IT Service or wider university.

We will do our best to accommodate any flexible working requirements you may have, within the constraints of providing the requireda service.

Newcastle University values diversity and is committed to recruiting and supporting staff and students from all sectors of society.

The University holds a silver Athena SWAN award, and does the School of MaST holds a bronze award. These recognise that the University has a solid foundation for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff.
