The minutes were approved.

IV. PROGRAM UPDATES

A. MESA Engineering Program (MEP)

Theresa M. Garcia, MEP Director, presented all items for MEP unless otherwise noted.

1.  Calculator Olympics – Saturday, April 26, 2003

Our annual Calculator Olympics will be held at San Diego City College from 9am-1pm this year and consists of participants from each San Diego MESA Alliance center. We will also have our 2nd Annual Robotics Competition during lunch. Many thanks to the IAB members who have signed up to be judges and proctors. Thanks to Hewlett Packard and Sony for donating calculators and prizes: your continued support makes this event an annual success, thank you!

2.  REMINDER: MEP 20th Anniversary Gala – Friday, May 2, 2003

At this year’s awards banquet we will be celebrating MEP’s 20th Anniversary at San Diego State University. The banquet format will be different than in the past, including a buffet-style dinner and giveaways. The Gala will be held at the Mission Valley Marriott from 5pm to 9pm. We are expecting at 250 students, alumni, faculty, staff and alumni at the Gala this year where we will announce scholarship awards and congratulate graduating seniors. Thanks to Sony and Qualcomm for being Program Partners with MEP! These two companies have donated over $5,000 for the 2002-03 Academic Year.

3.  MESAdvantage Next Steps

MESAdvantage is a joint venture between the San Diego MESA Alliance and student/industry supporters. The program provides standards, quality management, accountability, cost effectiveness, and a student report card. To date, each Program has presented MESAdvantage to their advisory boards for feedback. The next step is to visit industry to get internships for qualified students. On the advice of our IAB we will research available academic units and credits at SDSU for participating students. Please contact Theresa Garcia at (619) 594-5679 or for additional information, give feedback, or to get involved.

B. Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Program (MESA)

Robert Heredia, MESA Academic Coordinator, presented all items for MESA unless otherwise noted.

1.  Pacific Bell MESA Day Summaries

For the Saturday Academies leading up to MESA Day, over 90 students visited the SDSU campus to prepare their projects. On 3/15/2003, SDSU MESA hosted the Sr. MESA Day Finals where we won several math medals and the SAT 9-12 grade levels. This Saturday, April 12th the Jr. High MESA Day Finals will be held at UC Riverside.

2.  REMINDER: Sr. High Shadow Day – May 8. 2003

We need volunteers to host our annual Sr. High Shadow Day. Our goal is for at least 50 MESA Sr. High students to visit industry sites and gain more knowledge/insight about engineering and science careers. Forms are being mailed to IAB members this week. Confirmations will be sent to participating companies at the end of April. Please contact Angela Rawls at (619) 594-0153 or if your organization is interested in participating.

3.  REMINDER: MESA Pre-College Awards Banquet – Tuesday, May 20, 2003

The Pre-college banquet will be held in the SDSU East Commons from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Invitations will be mailed April 21st. Most improved and outstanding students will be recognized at the banquet as well as the 2003 scholarship recipients. Please contact Robert Goode at (619) 594-4197 or for more information or sponsor a table.

4.  Program Updates

One of our oldest MESA Pre-college sites, Lincoln High School, will be closing for renovations this summer. We are having rocket launches at all our schools. We still are in need of guest speakers for the Crawford HS site. This school has an allocated period of instruction and the advisor/teacher is excited about industry speakers. The class starts at 7:20am. Members interested in speaking at Crawford or any other MESA Pre-college site, please contact Robert Heredia at (619) 594-1508 or .

VIII. FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

A. Statewide Budget – Theresa M. Garcia

Budget proposals for MESA Pre-college and MESA Engineering Program have been submitted to MESA Statewide for approval, however, we will be uncertain about our budget until Governor Gray Davis reviews the State of California budget in May. Creative fundraising ideas on the part of all members will be needed next year as our programs stand to lose an estimated 25-50% in funding for the 2003-04 Academic Year. Gov. Davis is not expected to sign the official budget until late in the year (October).

XI. OTHER TOPICS

A. San Diego MESA Alliance Fundraising – Theresa M. Garcia

The SDMA is looking for additional funding due to current and future budget cuts in order to continue our services to our exemplary students and student leaders. We will be submitting collaborated proposals to industry and are looking for letters of support from our IAB and their highest company official or supervisor. More information will follow at the June 10, 2003 meeting.
