Waimea College Students Enrolling at University
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
(Enrolment at a NZ University)
The following regulations apply to current Year 13 students who will be completing NCEA Level 3/University Entrance in 2017, for entry to university in 2018 (and beyond).
Note 1: The University Entrance criteria outlined below applies to first year, non-restricted/open entry courses only.
Note 2: Not all first year courses at university are open entry. Many courses are limited entry and have a separate application process, which may require additional entry criteria in addition to University Entrance, and supporting evidence such as a portfolio or interview.
Note 3: In addition to University Entrance, most universities have introduced a Guaranteed Entry Score (GES) or Preferential Entry Scheme to guarantee entry into first year courses.
For further details on individual universities and specific degree courses, please check the individual university websites carefully or contact the school’s Careers Adviser.
STANDARD (MINIMUM) UNIVERSITY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
To gain this qualification students require:
NCEA Level 3
Three subjects at Level 3 or above, made up of:
- 14 credits each, in three approved subjects
Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2or above, made up of:
- 5 credits in reading
- 5 credits in writing
(Standards as specified – see NZQA website for further details)
Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
- Achievement standards – specified achievement standards
- Unit standards – package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 – all three required).
UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY
The University of Canterbury has introduced preferential entry requirements. Students in the following categories will receive Preferential Entry to UC (subject to gaining University Entrance):
- Students awarded a UC Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship.
- Students who have been awarded a UC Emerging Leaders or Dux Scholarship.
- Students with NCEA Level 3 who achieve an entry score of at least 150pts. (See the UC website for an example showing how the entry score is calculated.)
- Students who have been accepted for programme entry into the Bachelor of Fine Arts Intermediate Year or the Bachelor of Music (Performance).
Students not meeting the requirements for Preferential Entry will be offered places subject to priority and availability.
How to calculate your entry score from your NCEA Level 3 credits
Your entry score will be calculated by awarding points as in the following example:
Approved Subject(best 24 credits per subject) / Excellence Credits
(worth 4 points) / Merit Credits
(worth 3 points) / Achieved Credits

Calculate points / 8 x 4 points = 32 / 16 x 3 points = 48 / 56 x 2 points = 112
Entry score: 32 + 48 + 112 = 192
Note: Excellence and Merit credits are counted first, then Achieved results as required up to a maximum of 80 credits. In this example only 56 of the Achieved credits are required. Unit standards can be counted towards your entry score and are worth 2 points.

VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
University Entrance + 150 points Guaranteed Entry Score (or 180 points for Architecture/Building Science).
The Guaranteed Entry Score is calculated by awarding points to credits achieved at Level 3 as follows:
Excellence / 4 points per creditMerit / 3 points per credit
Achieved / 2 points per credit
The rank score is based on the student’s 80 best credits in University Entrance approved subjects at Level 3 or higher, and weighted by the level of achievement. (Both achievement standards and unit standards can be counted.)
A maximum of 24 credits in each subject may be counted
If students achieve fewer than 80 credits at Level 3 or higher, the rank score will be based on the number that have been achieved.
Students are advised to take approved university list subjects and achievement standards wherever possible in their school programme both for university entrance purposes and as the bestpreparation for university study.

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO
Preferential Entry to open-entry degree courses is given to students who have achieved University Entrance (as outlined) and who have oneor moreof the following:
NCEA Level 2 or Level 3 awarded with Merit or Excellence; and/or
An acceptance of a place in a College of Residence; and/or
An acceptance of a University of Otago undergraduate scholarship
140 points in Level 3 approved subjects, calculated as follows:
Excellence / 4 points per creditMerit / 3 points per credit
Achieved / 2 points per credit

MASSEY UNIVERSITY
University Entrance + 140 points Preferential Entry Score (best 80 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher, over a maximum of 5 approved subjects).
The Guaranteed Entry Score is calculated using the same criteria as that shown for Victoria University.

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY
University Entry + a ranking system similar to other universities will be applied. The total number of points needed varies depending on the area of study/degree programme and is based on your best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher, over a maximumof 5 approved subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in each set of credits.

From 2016, Auckland University has also introduced an Academic English Language Requirement (AELR) for entry into all undergraduate programmes. To meet the AELR via an entry qualification, you must achieve the following:
- For those applying on the basis of NCEA results: You must have gained the University Entrance Literacy Standard and a minimum of 17 credits in English at Level 2 and/or 3.
If you do not meet the AELR requirement through your entrance qualification, but otherwise qualify for admission, you can satisfy the AELR during your first year of study by passing an academic English language course as part of your General Education programme, or as otherwise specified by the Faculty.
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
The entry criteria for Lincoln University remains at University Entrance.
WAIKATO UNIVERSITY
The entry criteria for Waikato University remains at University Entrance.
