A sophisticated and musical poem that includes an effective title and showing details about freedom. The poet’s style is faithfully recreated and the form of the poem enriches the content. / An excellent poem with minor flaws that may include an occasional cliche or “telling” detail. Overall it is a challenging and enjoyable piece that accurately recreates the poet’s style while describing freedom; however, meaning may be sacrificed for sound in a few verses. / An entertaining poem with an effective title and adequate detail. The form is appropriate, but some meaning is sacrificed to maintain it. / The poem has potential, but requires revision. It includes cliches and “telling” details, but it is on topic. The rhyme scheme or free verse is inconsistent because meaning is sacrificed for music, but an honest effort has been made to imitate Whitman or Dickinson. / The poem is barely adequate. It includes cliches and common diction. Many details are irrelevant. The rhyme scheme or free verse does not complement the meaning of the poem, and the form distracts the reader from the message of the poem. / The poem is ordinary and atonal. The message is vague; the verses are disorganized, and the form detracts from the message of the poem. Overall, the poem reflects significant misunderstandings of the style and themes of Whitman or Dickinson.
