BSA NEW FIELDWORK PROJECTS
Guide notes for completion of application form – please read carefully before completing the form

IMPORTANT

Applications are necessary for all projects that need to be submitted before the Greek Archaeological Council (KAS). The BSA submits applications on behalf of projects, usually in November each year. Applications are reviewed by the School Fieldwork Committee on behalf of Council. We are allowed a total of six permits; three British School Projects (Full Permit) and three Joint Projects (‘synergasias’). The maximum duration is 6 weeks. Generally there is no limit on the number of permits for study seasons of current field projects or for museum study. The number of permits and the information required are subject to change, sometimes at very short notice. Acceptance of a project by the Fieldwork Committee is no guarantee that a permit will be received. The BSA charges a permit fee.

[a]

Type of Project.

Excavation – any project which involves digging test pits or trenches, or otherwise modifying the site.

Survey – any project which involves systematic intensive or extensive exploration of the landscape. Note that current Greek archaeological law restricts the area of survey in any one season to a maximum of 30,000 stremmata (30 km2)

Synergasia – an excavation or survey project carried out in co-operation with a member of the Greek Archaeological Service

Methodology: explain what you will do to answer your question, what techniques you will use, and demonstrate how you can be reasonably sure your methodology will work.

[f] Risk Assessment and Insurance.

Please attach a copy of the risk assessment. [i] Digital Data.

All digital material (photographs, site records and databases) form part of the project archive and must be deposited with the School.
