Oscar Nods & Shuns
J
ust two days after the Golden Globe Awards, Oscars gives a few expected nods and some surprisingly unexpected shut-outs. In the best actor category, Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"), Ben Kingsley ("House of Sand and Fog"), Jude Law ("Cold Mountain"), Bill Murray ("Lost In Translation"), and Sean Penn ("Mystic River") were all given Oscar nominations. However, Tom Cruise ("The Last Samurai") didn't make the Oscar's list, even though he was among the best actors for the Golden Globe. Russell Crowe the wonderchild of the Oscar was also shunned this year.
For best actress, Keisha Castle-Hughes ("WhaleRiver"), Diane Keaton ("Something Gotta Give"), Samantha Morton ("In America"), Charlise Theron ("Monster"), and Naomi Watts ("21 Grams") all made the cut. Last year's winner for best actress, Nicole Kidman didn't receive a nod for ColdMountain neither did Scarlett Johansson for "Girl with a Pearl Earring" or "Lost in Translation." Hollywood Entertainment watchers are saying that Charlise Theron is a shoe in for best actress this year.
"The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" is leading the pack for best picture; however, "Lost in Translation," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World", "MysticRiver" and "Seabiscuit" are all tough contenders. The nominees for best director are: Sophia Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Peter Jackson, Fernando Meirelles and Peter Weir. The thirteen years old youngster, Monica
Keisha Castle-Hughes makes history being the youngest actor ever nominated for best actress. TheOscars will broadcast on ABC on Sunday, February 29th at 7 p.m. Also don't forget the Oscar pre-shows on E! and the Style Network.
