Spring Skills Clinic

March 27 to 29, 2015 - Capital News Centre

Kelowna Minor Fastball (KMFS) is hosting a Spring Skills Clinic for players at all skill levels between 10 and 19 to prepare for the upcoming season. The clinic is led byJoni Frei, who is the Director of Coaching for Softball BC and Head Coach for the Ugandan national team. Coaches and parents are welcome to participate and help with the sessions to learn how to teach the skills. The clinic consists of sessions on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday that can be registered for individually or as a package. This is a great opportunity for high-quality fastball training!

Skills

  • Throwing: Athletes will learn and review the fundamental throwing technique, advanced throwing technique and throwing technique specific to positional play. Practice with various drills.
  • Fielding: Athletes will learn and review the fundamental fielding technique, advanced fielding technique and fielding technique specific to positional play. Practice with various drills.
  • Hitting: Athletes will learn the fundamental hitting technique and progress to concepts that will improve consistency. Drills include points of contact, swing compactness and efficiency.
  • Advanced Hitting: Athletes will review the fundamental hitting technique and progress to strategies and concepts that will improve their physical abilities and mental approach as a hitter. We will do a number of advanced hitting drills that will improve power production and swing efficiency.
  • Bunting: Athletes will learn and review the various bunting techniques including: sacrifice bunt, base-hit bunt, slap hit, push bunt, squeeze bunt and left handed slap.
  • Beginning Pitching: For new pitchers or pitchers in U12/U14 who are learning and practicing the fundamentals.Athletes will learn and review the fundamental progressions of a windmill pitch and different windup styles.
  • Advanced Pitching:For experienced pitchers working on speed, accuracy, and different pitches. Athletes will work on the fundamental progressions of a windmill pitch, various movement and speed pitches including the change up as well as strategies for throwing to batters and troubleshooting for mechanical breakdowns in the pitching progression.
  • Catching:Techniques and drills for blocking, framing, and throwing from knees and standing position.
  • Base-running: Athletes will learn the various starting techniques at each base, correct base-running technique, base-bath efficiency and sliding.
  • Speed, Agility and Conditioning: Athletes will be run through a variety of different speed, agility and quickness activities as well as a conditioning circuit with focus on core strength and muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

Coaches

  • Joni Frei - Director of Coaching for Softball BC, Head Coach for the Ugandan national team, and Owner/Director of Beyond The White Lines Softball Academy, and CANPitch Regional Pitching Instructor for Softball Canada.
  • Michelle Webster - Coached and played collegiate softball for Kansas Wesleyan College. Caught for Team Canada 2005 to 2008. Most recently was Head Coach of the Team BC U19 team that went undefeated and won gold at the 2014 North American Indigenous Games. Long-time instructor that will work primarily with catchers and hitters.
  • Danielle Damel - Coached and played collegiate softball for Texas A & M Corpus Christi. Currently pitches for the Spanish National team. Had a dominating performance on the mound against Team Canada for a win at the Canada Cup in 2009. Long-time instructor that will work primarily with pitchers and infielders.
  • Scott Ashworth - Caught for Team BC and is an assistant coach for the Canada Futures collegiate showcase team. Long -time instructor that will work primarily with catchers and hitters.
  • Bill Green– will offer a special session on Sunday at 10 a.m. for parents to explain the player recruitment process for college and scholarships and how to prepare starting when players are 13 years old.

☐Diamond Package (all 3 days for $275 and free camp T-shirt ($20 value))- 4 hitting sessions (one Friday, two Saturday, one Sunday), access to all non-hitting skills, and first choice on schedule.

☐Platinum package (Saturday and one of Friday/Sunday for $225)- 3 hitting sessions, access to all non-hitting skills, and priority choice on schedule (after diamond package).

☐Gold package (Friday and Sunday for $175)- 2 hitting sessions, access to all non-hitting skills, and priority choice on schedule (after platinum/diamond packages).

Individual Days/Sessions

Select Your Schedule

  • Select your skills for each day that you register. Pick a skill for each time or select "break" if not doing any skill at that time.
  • Skills have a cap on the number of participants. Players who register and pay first have priority when selecting skills.
  • You may register in as many skills as you want, although it is recommended to have at least one 1 hour break. There is a limit of one hitting skill on Friday/Sunday and up to two hitting skills on Saturday.
  • There is a lunch break on the Saturday session but no meals are provided. Please bring your own lunch or purchase at the CNC cafeteria.
  • The last 10 minutes of each session is used as a break for players to rest and switch between sessions.
  • Special session for beginning pitchers on Sunday has two 1 hour sessions to teach first-time or beginning (U12/U14) pitchers. Come out and learn to pitch!
