Cell Simile Project (40 points)
“A Cell is like…” Final Project is due October 13, 2014
Throughout this unit, we have discovered that a cell is “organized” and different parts (organelles) have different jobs to make the cell function properly. This organization is similar to the organization of a business, city, and almost any other thing that has parts that work together to make it function.
For this assignment, you may work with one partner (or by yourself) to create a display that compares a plant or animal cell and all of its parts to some other organized person, place or thing (noun).
1. If you choose a city, the most you can earn is a 90% because there are many examples out there. Any other comparisons can earn 100% or higher. No factories can be compared.
2. On the one side of the project, you will have a plant OR animal cell. The cell should include at least 10 organelles/parts (refer to Cell Essentials or Chapter 4; Section 2).
3. On the opposite side, you need to create a model or diagram of what you are you comparing to the cell. You must include 10 corresponding parts that have similar functions to those of the organelles.
4. If you’re creating a poster or model, you must include a description of the function of each cell part either next to the name or in a key.
5. You must show which part of the cell is similar to the part of your example by writing an explanation for how they are alike. One way to do this is to include labels that match (for example, letter “A” is next to a nucleus and “A” is next to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a factory). How the two parts are alike must be related to their function and not how they look.
6. All info must be typed!
7. Be prepared to orally present your project to the class and answer questions about the comparisons you’ve made.
Options for final project: Prezi, PowerPoint, Windows Movie Maker, 3-D Model, Paper Poster or poster board, or any other idea you have approved by Mrs. Hooton
