STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

Freedom’s Celebration

Freedom is a right that comes with the privilege of being an American. We have freedom to work, live, and study wherever we please, to decide how many children we want to have, and to speak out when we are against an issue. We have freedom to worship in whatever manner we please. We don’t have to worry about our churches being closed for what they teach or even being arrested for bearing the name of “Christian.” Every day we should thank God for our freedom, but, as Christians, we know that no one is completely free until he is free in Christ (John 8:36). God’s freedom allows us to find the joy of having our sins forgiven and the ability to grow in faith, and become the persons God wants us to be. Along with this freedom, though, comes responsibility. Our responsibility is to administer our whole lives—personality, time, talent, money, influences, goals, everything, in accordance with the spirit and ideals of Christ. What an exciting way to thank our Lord for the freedom we find in Him!

Prayer: Dear Lord, without Your gracious aid I would be forever bound to sin, forever lost. Thank You for the forgiveness and life You have given to me through Jesus. Thank You for the freedom we have in America and in Christ. Through Christ my intercessor. Amen.

Blessings on Your Stewardship Journey!

GREETING

P From God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace and peace be with you all.

C And also with you.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

C Just and gracious God, we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

P The apostle Paul assures us: "When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross." Jesus says to you, + "Your sins are forgiven." Be at peace, and tell everyone how much God has done for you.

C Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

C O Lord God, your mercy delights us, and the world longs for your loving care. Hear the cries of everyone in need, and turn our hearts to love our neighbors with the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED

THE LESSONS

First Lesson Deuteronomy 30:9-14

Second Lesson Colossians 1:1-14

Gospel Lesson Luke 10:25-37

INTRODUCTION

To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind is to reflect God’s mercy in responding to one’s neighbor. That mercy found its most profound expression in the "gospel that has come to you"—namely the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That gospel mercy comes to us again today: at the font, at the altar, and from the pulpit. It is very near to you.

The First Lesson is from Deuteronomy chapter 30 verses 9-14

9The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, 10when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

11Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. 12It is not in heaven, that you should say, "Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" 13Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, "Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" 14No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.

DISMISSAL

Congregation is reminded to stand and face the rear of church for the Dismissal at the end of the service. This gives you an opportunity to view the stained glass window of the ascending Christ giving a blessing. And it encourages the congregation to take the blessings of this worship into the week ahead.

P Go in peace. Proclaim the good news.

C Thanks be to God.

The Second Lesson is from Colossians chapter 1 verses 1-14

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

3In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

9For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
