MOTIVATIONAL MATERIALS:
-books by Eric Carle: Very Hungry Caterpillar Animals, Animals
TEACHER PREPARATIONS:
Week 1
-gather supplies
Week 2
-prepare folders for each table to save unused scraps
-cut painted papers into enough pieces for each table.
PROCEDURES:
week 1:
-read the Very Hungry Caerpillar by Eric Carle
-look at and discuss the way he makes his papers
-give each student a large piece of finger paint paper
-pour a 4" puddle of liquid starch on each paper, student spread it with 1" brush
-squirt one main color on each paper, student spread all over paper.
-add second color to paper, student dab the color to blend.
-teacher place on drying rack
week 2;
-show pictures from Animals, Animals
-discuss how Eric Carle cuts shapes and glues them together to make his pictures.
-pass out 9x12" white paper
-give each table a stack of all colors from last week
-at the end of class, each table needs to store their scraps in a folder for next week.
week 3:
-pass out papers from last week and scrap folders.
-students are to finish their pictures
-teacher will make suggestions of details to add as students begin to think they are finished.

1" bristle brushes
tempera paint
liquid starch
week 2&3 pencil painted papers
scissors 9x12" white paper
glue
