WSKG’s American Graduate High School Dropout Summit

Thursday, November 10, 2011 from 1 – 6:30 pm

This Summit will address the national school dropout crisis and experience in the Southern Tier. The focus is on best practices and sharing regional approaches for supporting high school graduation. At the conclusion, participants will view the national documentary High School Dropouts, and will be the audience for taping a televised Community Conversation with Crystal Sarakas.

The dropout crisis is a community wide problem. Community supports for children throughout their educational experience, such as quality early education, youth development and supportive family services are vital to supporting graduation.

The Regents Academy at Binghamton High School helps young people engage in learning and stay on track during their transition to High School. The Greater Southern Tier STEM Education initiative engages the entire community in school redesign, helping to keep education rigorous and relevant for student success in a global society.

Creating awareness and understanding of complex community issues, such as the dropout crisis, is challenging. Learn about BCC’s partnership with the Kettering Foundation and its plans for engaging citizens in public deliberation forums.
4:20 pm Screening of High School Dropouts
·  Participants will view this ½ hour documentary about the dropout crisis in Sacramento, California. The film documents the interventions created by a community to support successful graduation.
5:00 pm Light Dinner
5:30 pm Taping of Community Conversation with Crystal Sarakas
·  WSKG TV will film a talkback reaction to the High School Dropouts documentary. Summit participants will serve as audience members and will join in the conversation with questions for the panelists.
