SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Summer 2009

College Preparatory Level – Grades 9 -12

John McEachern High School

This reading list is for college-prep level English class only. Honors/Gifted students should refer to the list specific to your grade level (found on the school website by clicking on the Summer Reading Link.

The state mandates that all high school students should read 1 million words per year. We support a Summer Reading Program that helps students achieve this goal by allowing students to choose their own summer reading material. All students who are registered for college-prep level classes for the 2009-2010 school year have individual choice to satisfy the summer reading requirement, following the guidelines below:

·  All students should read a minimum of 150 pages of text.

·  The reading may be fiction or non-fiction and should be age and grade appropriate.

·  Students may choose to read from any of the following types of materials: novels,

books of poetry or short stories, autobiographies or biographies that tell a story, or

graphic novels.

·  If you don’t know where to begin to choose reading material, you can find links to recommended reading lists for young adults on our school website. Clink on the Summer Reading icon for more information.

·  Since you have complete choice, be sure to choose material that does not conflict with the values important to you and your family. The topic should be appropriate to discuss in school.

·  All reading should be completed by the first day of school on August 10, 2009.

All students will be assessed in regard to their reading during the first days of school when they present a Book Talk to the class. This will be one of your first grades of the semester. More information about Book Talks will be provided to students when they return to school.

HAPPY READING!
