30 second commercial

When your interviewer asks why you are the person for the position or why should I hire you, you must sell yourself. Your answer must be short and to the point. Your answer should highlight areas from your background that relate to current needs and problems. Recap the interviewer's job description, meeting it point by point with your skills. So in other words, come up with a 30 second commercial to sell yourself to the interviewer. This simple exercise will help you be prepared. Take the job description and then match your skills and abilities to it.

<pExample Job Description:
<brGENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Tutor will provide academic assistance for specific subjects and provide information on study skills to individuals (one-to-one interaction) and some small group settings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent and at least 30 credit hours of college course work. A grade of at least B in course(s) or subject(s) desired to tutor. Prefer individuals who are capable of tutoring in more than one subject.
ANTICIPATED HIRING SALARY: $7.00 to $9.00 per hour
CLOSING DATE: Open until filled. Applications will be reviewed beginning immediately.</font

<b
"So, why should we hire you for this tutoring position?"</center

I feel that I am very qualified for this tutoring position here at the college. I tutored my junior and senior year in high school for ten hours a week. I attended a nine-hour tutoring seminar on study tactics, stress management, test anxiety, and improving your scores and grades. I am experienced in working one-on-one and also conducting group studies. I have completed 35 credit hours here at the college and have maintained over a B average in all my classes. I am more than willing and able to tutor in more than one subject. I will tutor in English, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Math or wherever needed.

<bNote: Even if you are asked questions that cover all of these topics, it is good to reinforce that you are more than qualified.</font

A Self-Help Quiz for College Students and Recent Grads
<h4
Taken from Yana Parker's Resume Workbook: College Students and Recent Grads</center

<pThis self-help quiz can help you learn to identify your transferable skills and marketable personal traits--and recognize achievements that you didn't previously notice or fully appreciate. The Career Services Office can help you explore how these identified skills and assets apply to your resume, interviewing, and job search.</b

NOW ... Ask yourself these questions.

<ol
Good friends count on each other for lots of things. What do YOUR friends count on YOU for?

What does your FAMILY count on you for?

What DIFFICULTIES or barriers have you overcome, to get where you are now?

What COURAGEOUS things have you done that you feel good about?
<liIF one of your college friends were to BRAG about you, what would they say?
<liIF YOU felt totally comfortable bragging about yourself, what would you brag about? What are you most PROUD of?

What PRAISE or acknowledgment have you gotten from your instructors or from your employers?

If you suddenly had to move far away (say, your folks got a job in a different part of the country) what would your friends or instructors or colleagues MISS most about you? How would their lives be more difficult, less fun, or less interesting if you weren't there?

What CREATIVE things have you done that you feel good about?

Name about SIX QUALITIES or characteristics of OTHER people, that you most respect or admire.

Which of those qualities you named above are also true about YOU?
For each of those qualities, tell what you DO that gives people the impression that you have that quality.

Think of a PROBLEM that came up that had other people stumped, but that YOU were able to do something about, to improve the situation. <br
