Caring, Compassion, Friendliness, & Empathy

Applicable for Grades 1-3

Objective: Students will learn the importance of accepting others by writing a class story about caring for others, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religion, or disabilities.

Materials Needed:

Easel

Easel Pad

Colored markers or colored chalk and a blackboard

Procedure:

1.  Have a class discussion about caring. What does caring mean? How do we show others we care? How does this influence how we make friends?

2.  Encourage the students to think about ways in which we are all different from each other.

3.  Introduce the story writing project.

4.  Form a half circle around the easel or blackboard.

5.  Discuss the importance of caring for and making friends with others who may be different from them in some way.

6.  When the story is written, post it in a prominent place in the classroom.

Expected Outcomes:

Students will learn to accept others by considering the issue involves in being around others who might be different from them. They will demonstrate caring of others by playing with them, helping them, or by demonstrating in some way their understanding of caring for others.
