UW Army ROTC Competes in Army 10-Miler Race
District of Columbia— This past weekend, on Sunday October 21st, eight cadets from the Cowboy Battalion, competed in the AUSA “Army” Ten-Miler race in Washington D.C. The team consisted of four males and four females ranging from a sophomore cadet to a 5th year senior cadet. Cadets trained hard over the past two months and their efforts paid out during the competition.
Preparation for the Ten-Miler began at the very start of the semester. The team began training with three and four mile runs as well as sprints and hill workouts in order to re-acclimate to the high altitude and build endurance. Each week they continued to train with hill workouts, sprints and shorter runs, with a long run towards the end of the week that gradually increased each week to a maximum distance of 11.5 miles two weeks before the competition.
The cadet team flew to Washington D.C. on Friday with cadre member, Mr. Bryan Hulin, in order to collect registration packets the following day. Sunday morning we left for the race at 6:00 am. We headed to our designated starting areas among the 30,000 other runners and wounded warriors.
Each member of the team competed well, with everyone meeting or exceeding his or her goals as well as those who were returning improving their time from the previous year.
Cadet Jacob Williams summarized the weekend by saying, “Training for and competing in the Ten-Miler proved to be a valuable experience. As future officers, we must be prepared to lead from the front. Physical fitness is vitally important and participating in the Ten-Miler has helped us all improve. The race was also a great experience in that we were able to cheer on and support some amazing wounded warriors as they also competed in the race. Overall, the ‘Ten Miler’ was a great event in which to participate.”
