Bench to Bedside is a partnership program, joining the talents of high school teachers and university research faculty and students. For the partnership to be successful with measurable outcomes, teachers must commit to the following:

  • Attend the two-week NIH SEPA Bench to Bedside Institute at UF (Summer 2016) and create anActionProposal, incorporating translational research into a classroom-ready unit;
  • Implement Action Proposals in classrooms during the school year;
  • Model and promote inquiry / discovery learning;
  • Providein-service training to other teachers in school or district where possible;
  • Share progress with Bench to Bedside program participants and coordinators;
  • Present results of Action Proposalat Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium (JSEHS)held at UF (February 2017) and in format publishable on the internet.

It is essential for the participant’s school and district to provide modest support to insure successful local implementation of the Bench to Bedside partnership program. For the partnership to be successful with measurable outcomes, schools must commit to the following:

  • Encourage teachers to implement school Action Research Proposals;
  • Permit Bench to Beside staff to visit the classroom for observation and support as the teacher requests;
  • Allow release to report Action Proposal results at JSEHS and professional meetings (2-3 days/year);
  • Promote teacher leadership of inservice training at school and district levels;
  • Recognize teachers for extended inservice, service-learning and community-oriented activities, and Bench to Bedside-related curricular development and testing;
  • Publicize opportunities and assist in seeking funds for teachers to participate in advanced-level workshops and summer research internships.

The Bench to Bedside Partnership commits the following to participating teachers:

  • Access to biotechnology equipment lockers on-loan and professional support forclassroom activities;
  • Apply for a $200 minigrant to implement action research in the classroom;
  • Fee-waived student field trip to UF OR visit by staff to your classroom
  • Continued communication and assistance from UF partners;
  • Expertise and support in modifying curricula aligned with national and state standards;
  • Priority seating in workshops for teachers offered by the University of Florida andcoordinated by CPET;
  • Opportunity to participate in summer research internships in laboratories;
  • Three tuition-free graduate credits applicabletowards a Certificate in Biotechnology Education, an advanced degree, and/or Florida teacher recertification.
