¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL!

CHS/CLARK Modern Languages Department Mission Statement:

The goal of our department is to prepare our students to participate in a global society. Students participating in a Modern Language course or courses will develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and as they prepare for college admission and all language endeavors. Students will also increase their knowledge and appreciation of diverse cultures, while acquiring life-long learning skills. Furthermore, we are committed to implementing and delivering the California World Language Content Standards and upholding department standards, policies, and procedures as specified within each course syllabus.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class will be conducted in Spanish. Speaking, listening, reading and writing will be a part of this class. We will also learn about culture, and read stories.

GRADING POLICY

Participation …………..9% (90 points, 30 every six weeks)

Homework ……………9% (90 points, 30 every six weeks)

Classwork ……………..9% (90 points, 30 every six weeks)

Warm-ups …………….9% (90 points, 30 every six weeks)

Midterm Exam………20% (200 points, on week 9)

Quizzes ……………...24% (240 points, on weeks 3, 6, 12, and 15, 60 points each)

Final …………………20% (200 points)

GRADING SCALE: 100%-90% = A 89%-80% = B 79%-70% = C 69%-60% = D Below 60% = F

HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students are to complete assignments, review and practice class work at home for approx. 20 to 30 minutes. When homework is assigned, it is due the next day. Always write your name, date, assignment and period at the top of your paper. Homework is due at the beginning of the period and will not be accepted late.

MAKE-UP WORK

Make-up work (homework, worksheets, notes, etc.) is your responsibility. For excused absences only, you may have one day to complete assigned work for each day missed. It is your responsibility as a student to make-up any work that you have missed. If you are absent during a quiz, you will be required to make up the quiz at an arranged time. If no arrangements are made, and/or you do not come in for the make-up, you will receive a score of "0" for that quiz, no exceptions. Any work that was due the day of your absence is due upon your return.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

Many of the activities are done with partners or in groups. You must begin to work immediately when instructed by the teacher. Stay on task until signaled or asked to stop. Absolutely no English is to be spoken during this time.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

In order to earn participation points: come ready to learn, be polite, speak Spanish, and participate.

WARM-UPS

Every day at the beginning of class there will be questions to review material previously covered in class. As soon as you are seated, promptly take out your sheet and begin to work quietly. All questions must be answered in order to receive credit for that day.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS

Three ring binder and paper, assignments and notes, pencils (sharpened before the bell) and pens.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Only bottled water allowed. No other food and drinks

START OF CLASS & DISMISSAL OF CLASS

You must be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. If you are not in your seat, you will be marked tardy and will be assigned lunch detention. If persistent tardiness occurs, you will be referred to the student responsibility center. Begin your warm-up immediately.

You will be dismissed at the end of the period by the teacher, NOT THE BELL. Please do not get up from your seats until you are dismissed.

CONSEQUENCES FOR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR

1. Teacher warning.

2. Student will receive “0” for the day.

3. Conduct referral: Student will be sent to the Student Responsibility Center (SRC), and assigned lunch/after school detention, Thursday/Saturday school.

*Cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited and will be sent to RC if used during class.

If you are having difficulty with assignments or other material you do not understand, please see me for help or for a list of Spanish tutors. Make arrangements with me for help during lunch or after school.

VIDEOS

Parents, during the year students may have the opportunity to view videos in Spanish, as well as complete some previewing and/or follow up activities. The majority are films dedicated to exploring the historical, cultural, and culinary features of several different Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. In addition, we may watch G, PG and PG13 films. If you have any objections to these films, please let me know and I will gladly prepare alternative assignments for your son/daughter.

The teacher reserves the right to modify this syllabus as necessary. Any changes will be communicated.
