IIPAST AND CURRENT ACTIVITIES UPDATES

Other activities of Wellness Committee

  1. Walk/Wheel to School – recap

Much discussion of walk to school day; when should the next one be? We had some discussion of connecting middle school kids with elementary class rooms to log in their walking/biking. Mr. Schwegler suggested that one of the PE homerooms might be able to take this on as a project – class lists could be printed for the students (each student would be assigned to one class), who then could log the activity for students in the assigned class. We can maybe do the Fire Up your Feet again next fall; doing it in May would likely compete too much with May Mart. Amy will need more help.

Also discussion of what to do with the $400 that was awarded thanks to our participation. Perhaps the bike rack? Would be good to do this with some visibility and celebration. Should there be matching funds for this? Amy suggested possibly from the Civic League. Other ideas were local bike shop.

  1. Climate Committee Collaboration
  2. Mindfulness
  3. Anti-bullying

Climate committee also asked if Wellness committee can provide a couple of volunteers to do presentations at town hall meetings, NEXT WEEK-- two in a row? They want presentations on tolerance, especially around tolerance related to body image- could be 10 minutes each; Elisha will reach out to Jane and to Nancy Lewin for any suggestions, including perhaps through Kaiser who has volunteered to be helpful to us or to Towson sports medicine. Nancy K. will reach out to a contact at RPCS for any other ideas.

  1. Upcoming programs
  2. Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is coming November 12. Nicole Warren said they will be doing it for free.

  1. Debbie Phelps;

Pam reached out to Debbie Phelps to give a talk at RPEMS about ADHD with it being invitation only. We had some discussion about counselors doing individual outreach to families who might be particularly affected or interested, in a confidential way.

Ideas for future programs: The Towson sports medicine people had discussed providing perhaps monthly programs with different monthly topics. Nancy Lewinand Mark Schwegler had met with them previously; Nancy L. has the ideas they brainstormed. Can Nancy and Mark reach out to them again now (Towson Sports Medicine ) to talk about how to set that up. Some great ideas emerged at today’s meeting to ask them about including providing a clinic for coaches (many of our parents serve as coaches for kids—Towson could discuss stretches and warm ups for teams and also focus on Positive Coaching); also maybe a program in March on common basketball injuries and how to prevent them in anticipation of our March Madness wellness basketball tournament.

Subcommittees

  1. Are they working for us?
  2. Food
  3. Salad Bar-

AT least one report from a student that the salad bar is up and running again!

  1. Candy in School

A parent raised with Elisha the question of whether there should be candy allowed in school as rewards, etc. This seems to be a fairly common practice both in classrooms and in the library. We discussed having conversations with teachers about this; Jylani suggested instead that Mr. D just make a policy that this is not allowed- that is what has happened in other schools where she has worked. Action step: Nancy K. and Beth will gather some policies and maybe talk to Mr. D. about considering such a policy.
