OF

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE REPORT

(FL-SSC-1)

SITE NAME(S): The principal or best known name for the site. Examples: Bryan Homestead; Town Creek Mound.

SITE #: Leave blank -- will be assigned by Florida Master Site File

USGS MAP NAME: The name of the USGS 7.5 minute topographic map on which the site appears, spelled and punctuated as on the map and including the date of the map; with abbreviation "PR" for photo revised. Examples: Tallahassee 1970 PR 1976; Madison S E 1958.

CITY: Nearest town to site. If the site is not actually within the city limits, add "GV" for "general vicinity" after the town. Example: Tallahassee GV, site 10km NE.

COUNTY: The county in which the site is located, spelled out. If the site overlaps counties, use the county in which the greater part of the site lies.

TWP: The township, or north-south coordinate, as shown on USGS, Florida DOT, soils, and other maps. Examples: 11S, 1N, etc.

RANGE: The range, or east-west coordinate, as shown on above maps. The direction east or west is included, abbreviated as a single letter. Examples: 23E, 3W, 16W, etc.

SECTION: The section, a subdivision (usually a square mile) of a given township and range, as read from above maps.

ADDRESS/VICINITY OF/ROUTE TO: Give address if site is on lot of a structure with an address. PO Box or rural route information is not useful. Without address explain briefly how to get there. Example: "From Main St. and US 98 in Bradford, S on US 98, 5.8 mi.; right on dirt road, 1000m; site N behind house, 150m".

PHOTOCOPY: Only the portion of the quad sheet with the site needs to be photocopied, but be sure to indicate which portion of the sheet is included. A photobase soils map may be substituted for the quad sheet.

ENVIRONMENT:

NEAREST FRESH WATER: Distance (in meters) and compass direction should be given. Example: "120m NE"

LOCAL VEGETATION: Describe (1) dominant woody species; (2) nature of ground cover; and (3) percent of ground obscured. Example: "E half (recent clear cut), 20% weedy cover; W half scrub oak, assorted shrubs, 75% cover".

PRESENT LAND USE: Current use of the land, with special emphasis on aspects of use likely to affect the site's condition. Examples: (1) Pine plantation on a 50 year harvest cycle, (2) fish camp with little collection pressure except in clearing and roads.

NRCS SOIL SERIES: Example; "Dothan loamy sand, to 2 percent slopes.

SOIL ASSOCIATION: Example: "Fuquay-Dothan"; not necessary to fill in if soil series is known.

SITE CONDITION: Type and apparent degree of disturbances/threats. Examples: Site is in plowed field; Drainage ditch across E side of site -- exposed artifacts in side slope, re-working of ditch would damage).

REPOSITORY: Where information is filed.

REPORTER(S): List name of person primarily responsible for completion of form. If there are multiple recorders, list in order of importance.

CONTACT PERSON: Person(s) other than Reporter who could furnish information about the site. If possible to ascertain, indicate whether landowner would be agreeable to further contact about the site.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION: Narrative description of site, on attached pages. Describe what is present (projectile points, pottery, nails, foundations, etc.) and quantity of materials. A tracing of projectile points or any design on pottery will be helpful in deciding whether further investigation would be needed.
