MELVILLE NY

Melville NY is classified as a hamlet in the city of Huntington, NY. It has a population of 19,000 people. Its history is recorded back to the 1600s when it was called Samuel Ketcham’s Valley. Later it became known as Sweet Hollow. It wasn’t until 1854 that it was officially known as Melville. The name may have come from the Latin word for “honey”, due to the wealth of honey bees in the area. This may also explain why the area was named Sweet Hollow previously.

Another theory is that the city was named after an author of that time, named Herman Melville. He was just becoming famous at that time.

The oldest building in the town is the Presbyterian Church, built in 1829. In 1909 a trolley was established that connected the town to Huntington and Amityville. As motorized vehicles became more popular and prevalent, the need for the trolley abated.

The town is located on the Long Island part of New York, and covers about 12 square miles.
