OVERVIEW OF 911

New Hanover County Public Safety uses a system know as enhanced 911. It provides the answering point with information such as the resident’s or business’ name, address, phone number and any other information entered into the database. While this information is provided on the screen, it is not always correct; therefore, the call taker must confirm and verify the information with the caller.

What happens when you dial 911?

When requesting any type of Emergency Service, it is important to remain calm and listen to the questions being asked by the telecommunicator in order to obtain the most quick and efficient response from emergency units. Our center uses Emergency Dispatch software that displays specific questions to ask callers that will assist the responding units and also provides pre-arrival instructions to assist the caller until help arrives on scene.

What if you call from a cell phone?

The 911 center telecommunicator receiving your call only sees information on the screen about your cellular service provider, including your cell phone number. You should be ready to provide the telecommunicator with location information. This way you will get the help you need without delay.

You should dial 911 when:

Ø  You need police, fire or medical response.

Ø  You see fire or smoke.

Ø  Life or property is in danger.

Ø  A crime is being committed.

Ø  A fight is in progress.

Ø  You witness a crime being committed.

Ø  You have been injured

You should not dial 911 when:

Ø  To get road or weather conditions.

Ø  To report area power outages.

Ø  To ask for directions or the current time.

Ø  To ask what time the fireworks or other community celebrations begin.

These types of calls tie up the telephone lines and prevent someone with an emergency from getting help quickly. Non-emergency telephone numbers for appropriate agencies can be found in your telephone directory or are available online at several websites, or you can call 411 for directory assistance.
