Merit Badge Prerequisties

Fishing:

Scouts that want to try to complete this badge at the camporee need to work on and practice:

·  requirement # 4 (knots) this I find is the most challenging part of the merit badge for most scouts.

·  Requirement 7 - regulations - requires them to get/download the New Jersey regulations and review ahead of time.

·  Requirement #9 - catch at least one fish and ID it. - they might not catch one that day so if they can complete it ahead of time and get an adult to sign off that it is done I can accept it. Of course scouts 16 years old or older need to have a fishing license.

·  Requirement 10 - clean and cook a fish they have caught (or bought). This should also be done ahead of time with a parents note (pictures are always nice too) is acceptable.

Bird Study:

·  2. Draw sketch of bird with parts labeled; sketch wing and feathers Bring with you.

·  5. Try to cover 10 to 15 birds on your own. We will most likely see: crows, ravens, grackle, bluejays, egrets, pileated woodpeckers, red shouldered-hawk, and tufted titmouse, so please do not log any of these. If you have a chance, go hang out by the lake in Mercer County park and watch the Bald Eagle to log! Drive along most rural roads in Mercer County and see Turkey Vultures. Look for ducks and water birds along any river or creek. Go to local farm (ie: Terhune or the like) and see chickens, geese, ducks, etc. There is plenty to see any nice day.

·  6. Bring birdcalls if you have them for hunting.

·  8. PREREQUISITE - Do A, B or C and bring pictures on phone or printed out.
