Checklist for the Trainer

Review this checklist to help stay in compliance with the training portion of OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).

Before conducting training on hazard communication, have you:

Obtained a copy of the rule?

Read and understood its requirements?

Prepared an inventory of hazardous chemicals at your facility?

Ensured that all containers of hazardous chemicals are labeled?

Obtained a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each hazardous chemical?

Made MSDS’s available to workers?

Prepared a written Hazard Communication Program (HCP)?

Established procedures to maintain current program?

Established procedures to evaluate effectiveness?

Identified workers in need of hazard communication training?

Suggested items to bring to training session on hazard communication:

Employee handout, quizzes, presentation, speaker’s notes

A copy of your written Hazard Communication Program

A copy of your facility’s emergency response plan

After completing training on hazard communication, trainees should understand:

 Their “Right to Know”

 Operations at your facility where hazardous chemicals are present

 The location and availability of your HCP

 The physical and health hazards of hazardous chemicals in the work area

 The routes of entry for chemical exposure

 How to read a label and use the information it provides

 Labeling requirements for your facility

 How to read an MSDS and use the information it provides

 Where to obtain an MSDS at your facility

 How to choose appropriate personal protective equipment

 Safe handling practices for using chemicals

 Methods to detect the presence or release of a chemical hazard

 How to respond to spills and leaks

 Emergency first aid and response following an exposure incident

 Details of your Hazard Communication Program

 How to obtain a copy of your Hazard Communication Program
