A Web Traffic Analysis Attack Using Only Timing Information

Abstract

The attacker can detect the time whenpackets traverse the encrypted tunnel in the uplink direction,but has no other information about the clients’ activity. Theattacker’s objective is to use this information to guess, withhigh probability of success, the web sites which the clientvisits. What is distinctive about the attack considered here isthat the attacker relies solely on packet timestamp informationwhereas the previously reported attacks against encrypted webtraffic have mainly made use of observations of packet sizeand/or packet count information.

Existing system

We introduce an attack against encrypted webtraffic that makes use only of packet timing information onthe uplink. This attack is therefore impervious to existingpacket padding defenses. In addition, unlike existing approaches,this timing-only attack does not require the knowledge of thestart/end of web fetches and so is effective against traffic streams.

Disadvantages

  1. System performance is low.

Proposed system

We demonstrate the effectiveness of the attack against bothwired and wireless traffic, achieving mean success rates in excessof 90%. In addition to being of interest in its own right, thistiming-only attack serves to highlight deficiencies in existingdefenses and so to areas where it would be beneficial for virtualprivate network (VPN) designers to focus further attention.
