Build-A-Cell Project
During this project you will be creating a 3-D plant or animal cell. We will be spending approximately a week of class time on this project. If you fall behind schedule, then it is your responsibility to get caught up at home.
Objectives: 7.12D Differentiate between structure and function in plant and animal cell organelles; 7.12E compare functions of a cell to the functions of organisms; 7.12F Recognize that according to cell theory all organisms are composed of cells and cells carry on similar functions such as extracting energy from food to sustain life
TIMELINE
Day 1: Introduction to the Build-A-Cell project and begin research (“Organelle Research” handout)
Day 2: Complete the Table “Organelle Research”. If you do not finish, you will need to complete it at home.
Day 3: Bring in materials in order to construct your 3D model of the cell. If you wish to store your supplies in the classroom, there will be a designated area in my classroom for materials for each class period. It is YOUR responsibility to put your name on everything that you bring in or construct. You can also keep it in your locker or take it home every day if you wish. I am not responsible for any missing items.
Day 4: Cell Build day…The project is due Tuesday, 1/20 (keep in mind, Monday is a holiday!)
Organelle Research Handout
This handout will be given to you the first day to complete. You will have various resources available in the classroom to complete the table. If you wish to bring other resources from home, you may. If you lose a copy of the “Organelle Research” handout it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get a new one from my webpage/make-up work folders and get caught up. Remember, you can access my webpage and pay for printouts in the library. There will be a check point at the beginning of Day 3 to ensure you have completed the research prior to building the model. A total of 10 points will be taken off each day it is not completed after day 3. Not completing the handout by Day 3 will affect your final grade. You must have this in class with you EVERYDAY and it will be a part of the overall final grade.
You must complete the handout for each organelle regardless of which cell you are creating a model of, plant or animal. You must give the function of the organelle, draw a picture of the organelle, come up which an analogy of the organelle, (comparing the function of the organelle to the function of something else. For example: ______is like ______because______.)
Cell Build
You are using any household items to construct a 3-D model of a cell based on your research. The type of cell will be assigned to you (plant or animal). It must include all organelles that are included on your “Organelle Research” handout that pertain to the cell you were assigned. You must label all parts of the cell on your model. Please be aware of the structure and function of each organelle when looking for items to use. Please also be aware of the sizes of the organelles relative to the whole cell. Use the resources that are available to make an accurate representation of a cell that is to scale.
You may start bringing any materials from home. If you have some extras, you may bring some to put in the community box. This may be helpful if someone else brings in extras of something different that you might need or could use. Various colors of paper, colored pencils and glue sticks will be available to you to use. If you need any other supplies, you will need to bring them from home. Each class period will be responsible for putting away their items and cleaning up the classroom at the end of the period.
Due Date and absences
These instructions will be on my website for you to access at any time. Extra copies of instructions or handouts may not be available in class. Being absent any day is not an excuse for your project being late. You must get caught up at home on your own time just like you would for any other assignment that is missed. If a project is late you will receive 25 points off the earned grade.

The “Organelle Research” handout is half of the project grade. It must be completed and correct. It must be turned in the day the project is due in order to receive full credit for the project. If you lose it after it is completed, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to redo the assignment prior to the due date. Remember that you can lose points on that part of the grade if you do not complete it in a timely manner.
The model will be graded on the inclusion of all required structures and labeling the structures that are found in the cell that you were assigned.
