RtI: Data-Based Decision Making – Case 4

BACKGROUND

Student: Calista

Age: 7

Grade: 2

Time of Year: January

  • At Awesome Elementary School, the third cycle of Tier 2 interventions has ended for second grade students who were not responding adequately to reading instruction in the general education classroom. Her intervention group meets 5x week for 30 minutes in a 3 week cycle. Due to the severity of Calista’s academic learning gap, the Teacher Data Team recommended progress monitoring using words correct per minute (wcpm) on Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) .
  • In the first two intervention cycles, Calista received direct instruction in phonics using 95% Group routines for explicit teaching and FCRR activities for practice. Focus was on skill 3 during consonant blends during cycle 1 and on skills 4 & 5 consonant digraphs during cycle 2.
  • In intervention cycle 3, after demonstrating mastery on phonics skills 4, the teacher data team decided to place her in a silent-e phonics instruction group with a different teacher.
  • Below is her data. The Teacher Data Team is meeting on her today to decide how to proceed further with Calista.

Tasks:

  1. Plot Calista’s AIM Line and ORF data.
  2. Using the graph, determine what type of response the student is having to the intervention (positive, negative, questionable).
  3. Is the rate of progress acceptable?
  4. Should the intervention continue?
  5. What should the teacher data team expect to see in Tier 1 and Tier 2 over the next 4 weeks if this rate of progress continues?

Points to ponder:

  1. Does Calista show a need for increased intensity in her intervention?
  2. How big is Calista’s gap? How far below grade level is Calista?
  3. Is there enough time to close the gap?
  4. If Calista continues at this rate, will her gap be closed in 2nd grade?
