Welcome to Medical Math! The objectives of this course are:

  1. To review basic mathematical calculations
  2. To instruct on how to convert equivalents from one system to another and accurately mix and measure drugs
  3. To provide the mathematical background required for pharmacology.

We will start the class with an introduction to medical math and the careers that require knowledge of them. We will then review the following and how they are related to healthcare:

  1. Algebra
  2. Measurement systems and conversions
  3. Dilutions, solutions, and concentrations
  4. Drug dosages and IV calculations
  5. Linear equations and graphing
  6. Exponential and logarithmic functions
  7. Charts, tables, and graphs
  8. Biostatistics

You will work primarily in cooperative groups to complete calculations, gather and analyze data, and then present your results. You will have to work hard and contribute to your group in order to do well!!

REQUIRED MATERIALS – BRING EVERY DAY TO CLASS:

GRADING RUBRIC:

CLASS ACTIVITIES – 40%

TESTS/QUIZZES – 40%

PROJECTS – 20%

What is being evaluated?

Application of content: through analysis and critical thinking, communication skills in labs, data analysis.

Demonstration of independent thought: projects, labs, etc.

Demonstration of Proficiency: tests, quizzes

Demonstration of cooperative learning: group work

Effect use of data collection: labs and projects

Effective use of resources: labs, projects, tests, quizzes, daily preparation

Practice of Content:worksheets and calculations

  1. Arrive on time and prepared to work (any requirements missing will result in lowered grades for that day’s assignment).
  2. Follow all directions and stay on task.
  3. Show RESPECT for ALL classmates, teachers and school property.
  4. Absolutely no food, gum, drinks or unauthorized electronic devices are allowed in the classroom. STRICTLY ENFORCED!
  5. Safe laboratory practices AT ALL TIMES – NO EXCEPTIONS!
  6. Late work will have points deducted
