Read, absorb and think about the questions posed in the background information on:
The history of the docks;
Merseyside Development Corporation;
Tourism.
Draw a line graph to show population change in Liverpool.
In Liverpool-Background it is argued that Dockland is the focal point of Liverpool.
The scale of dockland redevelopment in Liverpool is vast. Twelve distinct areas of regeneration can be identified.These date from 1981 to future plans.
Student Activity
Use the aerial photograph on the home page in the Liverpool Docks tour, to draw a sketch map to locate Liverpool Docklands.Use an atlas to locate Liverpool docklands within the region.
Annotate the map with the names of docks. Use the titles of the individual dock files to add the date of development and the type of regeneration for each dock.

Evaluate the impact of each development and compare the different types of regeneration
For each dock click on the name on the aerial photo, Liverpool Docks tour. Use the information found in each file, which may be in the form of text, photographs, video, interviews, or planning documents, to:
- evaluate the impact –complete the Impacts of redevelopment –evaluation sheet for each dock
- complete a quality of environment Excel file Quality of environment survey
- complete a bipolar survey Excel file Bipolar survey
At the end of the text information for some of docks there is a ‘Discussion points’ section to highlight issues particular to that development.
The list of developments are arranged geographically S to N on the drop down menu. You may like to start with Pier Head which is the historical centre of Liverpool docks.
