Oakham Meeting

The Oakham meeting was attended by 16 members who engaged in an invigorating discussion regarding how the group has evolved.

We discussed speakers and a show of handsagreed that we continue to have them at the Oakham meetings.

Barrywill be engaged in other activities throughout the summer months and handed the speaker duties over to Marjorie and John.

We welcomed Caroline McKillon for the evening whohelpedHazelmake and serve coffee tea with the tasty biscuits.

Marjorie reminded every one present that our annual adventure on the waterways would take place on 30th May this year. Already there has been a rush for seats and as of going to press there are 4 seats remaining out of 26! Hurry! By the way the cost is £6 per person, which is terrific value for once again we have Rovin’ Ron to play and serenade us “down the river” in the nicest possible way!

July 1st finds our caravan on the historic fields of Launde Abbey where we will have a Retreat Day which includes a talk by the representative of Marie Curie, followed by a super buffet lunch. Those of us who dined there last year will remember the fabulous meal we enjoyed then.

This timeout the day is £12 per person. Book as soon aspossible, certainly no later than 14 June at the latest.

Melton Meeting

A select few had a proper coffee morning on a grey damp day – no committee members attended so no business to discuss. Lots of chatter and everyone was happy to pay for their coffee. Mavis organised the raffle so £19 was raised from the sale of coffees and the raffle. Jane and Margaret washed up and Margaret bookeda table at the Harboro Hotel for 7 members.

African Dream Concert – report by John A

Our group’s show at The Victoria Hall, Oakham, warranted all the superlatives, “ WOW!” “SELL OUT!” “A MUST SEE SHOW!” “RIVETING!” “TALK OF THE TOWN!”

Loyal supporters and members, from as far afield as Gatwick, Attleborough, Norwich, Scunthorpe, Langtoft, Nottingham, Loughborough, Stamford and Leicester enjoyed a spellbindingly, glorious evening of African songs and music. Those who failed to attend really did miss an exceptional evening out which was enjoyed by an audience aged from 10 years to those in their eighties!

Great credit must go to Di de Wet and her animated, high spirited Rejuvenating Choir. Their uplifting performancestillcontinues to be a conversational topic in the towns. Di’s choir carried the audience along with a non stop programme of mesmerising songs such as “Zambezi” to hand clapping protest ballads ofyesterday.

Those present enjoyed a glass of wine or nonalcoholic drink with sausage rolls and nibbles whilst tickets continued to be sold for the wonderful raffle prizes which were presented at the end of the evening.

Speaking to the majority of supporters as they left the hall all had smiles on their faces and thankedthe Group and Choir for organising such a heart gladdening event.

Very special thanks is owed to the business communities of Uppingham, Melton Mowbray and Oakham as without whose aid we would not have attained the magnificent full house capacity achieved. Rutland Radio and the Melton Radio Stations’ broadcasts also secured a wide interest for the event.

Our group is indebted to the valuable support of Rutland’s Lord Lieutenant, Dr Laurence Howard, The High Sherriff of Rutland, Mrs Trish Ruddle, Melton Mowbray’sMayor, Marilyn Gordon, Uppingham’s Mayor Dave Casewell, and Oakham’sMayor Adam Lowe. I will mention another special guest, Tony Ruddle, wholead the audienceto dance and clap tothe Rejuvenating Choir’s final number! The happy assembly rose as one to dance, stamp, and clap and sing their own improvisation to conclude an “African Dream” to remember!

To make you laugh….

A married couple intheir early 60s are celebrating their40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on theirtable.
She said, 'For being such an exemplary marriedcouple and for beingloving to each other for all this time, I will grant youeach a wish.'

The wife answered, 'Oh, I want to travel aroundthe world with my darling husband.'

The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! – twotickets for the Queen Mary II appearedin herhands.

The husband thought for a moment:

'Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again. I'msorry my love, but mywish is to have a wife 30 years younger thanme.'

The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish.! So the fairy waved her magic wand andpoof!...

The husband became 92years old.
